Do you think the United States will defeat the cartels?

Oh... I do not believe the cartels can be defeated, only contained. You see, they are basically businessmen doing business. As long as there is demand for their products, they will survive, just like any other business.
Now... The cartels in business at the moment could be dealt with through brute force, but the ideas of a cartel or of drug smuggling cannot be killed with bullets. However, I believe that President Donald Trump's domestic policies will improve the quality of life of US' citizens, therefore shrinking the demand for drugs as mental painkillers significantly enough to either massively tone down or even halt the cartels' activities on US' soil. Instead, they might branch out to Konzentrationslager Europa or to Canada, if the resignation of Trudeau does not incite further conservative reform there.
Now... As hopeless as it sounds regarding the eradication of the cartels, it is actually pretty good news. The point is, should Demo (n) crats ever return to power in the USA, the resulting human misery will bring the demand for mental painkillers back and will therefore bring the cartels back to the US' soil, undermining the resulting totalitarian left-wing regime's ability to reign in its own citizens, much less the rest of the world.
Yes, they will be decimated.
I've read some articles that the US military on the border has a deal with cartels to lower possible death rates on both sides :D
I don't really think that anyone wants to die in the name of the holy war... os someone else's political career...
No because the United States arms the cartels in the first place

I don't think so. The best case scenario is wiping out one cartel so badly other ones absorb them, killing some leaders, and putting enough pressure on the mexican government that the rampant corruption gets reigned in.
The cartels stretch from there through South America, and then gangs in Asia and Europe who move drugs as well. I mean, it's literally war on drugs 2.0, the more successful it is, the higher drug prices will climb, and the more incentive there is for others to fill the gaps like in the 1.0 version. Add on that many of them can be manufactured locally, and it doesn't look good.
It would not surprise me in the slightest, as when Trump was last in office he had a face to face with a Taliban Leader and Trump straight up stated Through an interpreter, that If any US troops died as a result of hostile actions by the Taliban, the Taliban leader would be dead soon after, and showed the Taliban Leader a photo of the leaders home, to show that US Forces knew where he lived.
I can see Trump using a similar method to that or the one shown in the Tom Clancy book 'Clear and Present Danger'.
Probably not totally, no. You have to realize that cartels and mafias are one shade off of legitimate terrorist organizations. And they're going to behave that way. Even if the US military spanks the cartels, smaller time groups will form and rise up to take the cartels' place.
Intervention in Mexico to completely defeat the cartels would be very difficult. Remember how much trouble we had in Iraq? Imagine a much bigger area with a lot of urban areas and mountainous terrain and an opponent with better funding and weapons (like FPV drones) than the Iraqi insurgents ever dreamed of having. A better approach would be robust border security, controls on remittances, and defeating cartel members on the US side of the border.
So this is what phase in the war on drugs? USA Americans are fucking dense if they think that anything other than reducing the domestic demand will help. Going after the cartels will just limit supply and make the successful cartels even more money & power.
Cartels aren't going down without costing American lives. This could cause a lot of trouble in America.
They are the worst of the worst.
Plus they have tunnels everywhere so how could they possibly get rid of all of them?
It might sound crazy but that will be new Afghanistan for Americans. You guys dont know how deep in their society cartels are. Their government is compromised and on cartels payroll. They are gonna know when you guys are gonna come and what you gonna do. Even if you manage to wipe the off the planet. How you gonna convince ordinary people not to help next criminal organization when they are making only 385 usd per month
Catels the new Afghanistan.
Because just who exactly are they? It's hardly black / white and these are giant businesses.
Defeat? Eradicate? = Impossible , it's a combination of highly sort after product ( s ) .
the USA is also the cartel...
good luck with that one
also... the USA Special "Ops" already work in Mexico... "everyone" knows about that
Right now?, with more firing of competent people in favor of hiring incompetent trump loyalists? I never knew the united states government liked to gamble that ridiculously high.
The war on terrorism was a lost cause. So it's basically the same thing again but closer to home. If you thought refugees where bad already it will be 10x worse.
Yes. We have the intelligence and special forces to do it. Like ISIS. We will first bomb their haciendas and then mop up with Marine Recon. I wish I could volunteer.
Just like we defeated the Taliban... Smart.
@AManOnTheWeb Democrats had the controls. There's a new Sheriff and deputy in town.
To defeat the Taliban? Bush Jr. spent 7 years fighting in Afghanistan and Trump spent 4 years fighting them...
@AManOnTheWeb No DNA between Trump and any Bush except in the the mothers of his children.
No, we don't have the intelligent means to end them or even control them, especially now that we've pissed off our allies that use to feed us info.
No? Because they don't want to. If US wanted to get rid of them they'd be gone.
The cartels fight among themselves, as well as to external forces. Some always survive.
Yes. If we’re committed. The cartels are nothing compared to the US if we hit them hard.
OPEC? Very unlikely. Which others did you have in mind?
Cartels aren't anything you want to mess with. We have guns and body armor, so do they, but they also have connections and know their area better than we ever could.
Didn't they try that in south America years ago. It didn't work to well then.
America doesn't have the balls. trump is all smoke and blame.
They can defeat them but they are not trying to
Destroying the Cartels would be a busy afternoon for the U. S. Military.
Unless they make use of their famed tunnels, then it might become a busy year (kind like the Vietnam War, only the Mexican tunnels are much more spacious and the only trap inside these tunnels that I can think of would be IEDs, since I do not think Mexico has many natural biological weapons like the Vietnamese poisonous snakes, making the job of the tunnel rats much easierbut not as easy as above-ground operations)
"easier, but"*
@CalmUntilAbused The cartels don't have to be obliterated, only eviscerated, to get the point across.
Imagine being one of 200 cartel Sicarios who has just attracted the attention of a Spectre gunship... no bueno.
Did you know that MS-13, is actually a gang that was born out of L. A., NOT mexico
Someone has to, no one’s doing a damn thing where they are based
America is run by the Trump Crime Cartel !!!
As much as will ever WIN the war on terrorism.
The U. S. is a cartel in itself.
There’s nothing a nuke can’t fix
Trump isn't smart enough.
My opinion? they are idiots
Yes but it will be rough
I do.
Yes.
