2025 may be the last year we will ever see a penny (officially called Lincoln Head Cent after the 16th President) minted by the United States.

President Trump has instructed the US Mint to stop minting pennies. Here's the story, reported by USA Today.

It's important to note that it costs almost three (3) cents to mint a penny worth one (1) cent, meaning the US Mint effectively loses almost 100 million dollars a year minting billions of pennies, many of which go to collectors and are not used in general circulation.

This is nothing new. New Zealand stopped producing one cent coins in 1989, Australia followed suit in 1992 and Canada stopped in 2012. In those countries, prices are rounded to the nearest five cents.

US Congress also looked at stopping the one cent coin in the 1990s; it was met with a lot of criticism. Most people believe that it will take an Act of Congress, not just a Presidential Executive Order, to stop the penny.

Let's say that stores start rounding prices up to the nearest dollar. Something costs $7 but then with sales tax, it's 7.53. Is the government going to waive the 3¢ or does someone besides the consumer get to keep the extra 2¢ if the store rounds up to the nearest nickle?

You can guarantee that your monthly bills like electricity will down to the penny. 1¢ x 5,000,000 customers = $50,000. Is a corporation going to give that up?

I don't care if it costs more than the face value to mint coins. At least that value goes to consumers. Coins are the only currency with tangible value.

I have a feeling that eliminating 1¢ coins isn't about saving the government money. There is probably a benefit to investors in metals who plan to make big profits on tangible assets, like the way they invest in real estate.

The long range goal is to get rid of cash entirely and institute a cashless society where everything you do and every transaction you make, from yard sales to tipping, to helping a homeless person, to store purchases, can be tracked and taxed.
And, eventually, your spending habits will count on your social credit score.

Back in the 90’s when we were in Germany we did without pennies and had no problems. If something cost 12.53 we paid 12.55, if something cost 12.52 we paid 12.50, so how do you see a problem. Pennies are a big waste for everyone.

The US mint is not printing money to MAKE money, and besides, if you wanted to then you could change the metal composition of the coin to make it cheaper. The US dollar, including the penny is a fiat currency which means the value is not tied to the value of the material which the coin is made out of.

The purpose of the coin is to be used in transactions and the various denominations is meant to protect the customer. The penny being the lowest means that it is also responsible for making sure that the customer receives back as much value as possible below the nickle. When you remove the penny that means that the store instead keeps any value below the nickle and will incentivize stores to exploit this to earn more money.

Furthermore, this has nothing to do with the value of the penny not being worth the cost of printing them. How do I know this? Because the penny is not the only unprofitable coin. The nickle is also unprofitable etc..

I can only draw two conclusions from this. Either Elon Musk and Donald Trump has no idea how currencies works or.. and this might not be mutually exclusive.. they just want to be seen doing something for the headlines. Strictly put this is just a mostly worthless government action that only serves to somewhat harm the people who are still using physical currencies to pay since this allows businesses to shave a little more from you.

No one even picks them up on the sidewalk anymore. Most reside in cans or jars. Every once in awhile they will take them to one of those coin counter machines at their bank and cash them in. Think of it like this. With the billions of pennies minted over the years, why do we need more. Or one might also ask... "Where the hell did all of them go to?"

Well, with taxes being odd amounts, I'm wondering how that'll work. I wouldn't miss pennies. But my city taxes are 9.5 to the dollar. So the tax structure will have to be changed too.

What I need to know is what is the scrap metal price of a US cent and can I make money by melting them down outside the US?

From what I've heard, getting rid of our cents was a blessed relief because goods were priced at $xx.99. People just started to chuck them out as worthless. That made the mint make more, so super markets could make change with them but nobody could pay for anything with them because the people behind you would get very angry as you counted out the cents.

So it went from mint to super to person to rubbish tip or to a sock beside your bed as a cosh for intruders. They just didn't circulate which is the point of a coin other than self defense.

They will only charge $.05 when the actual amount is $.025 or higher. Anything from $.0249 and below is zero. This rounding already occurs at the penny level and has for centuries. And this will only apply when paying cash.

I feel indifferent about it, really. These days just 1 single cent makes basically no difference anyway. The only thing I'd miss is that pennies look kind of pretty and I like how they are brown instead of grey like all the other US coins. In my childhood at school we also had like a whole day dedicated to learning about the 4 different US coins and their values: pennies, 1 cent, nickles, 5 cents, dimes, 10 cents, and quarters, 25 cents. So pennies are somewhat nostalgic in that sense. But other than that we wouldn't be losing much.

Getting rid of pennies has been a topic for a long long time. It hasn't been done yet. I have mixed feelings about it myself.

Does the cost of making a penny matter? A penny is used thousands of times. So is the value of a penny the value of the copper and manufacturing cost? Or is it the value of thousands of usages?

Would I miss the penny? It would take a bit of getting used to it, but I'm sure I can handle it.

The subject of retiring the penny is one that has been around for many years, basically ever since it was discovered that it cost more to mint a penny than the penny was worth, which at the time was 1.5 cents per penny. It probably shouldve been done around that time, which would've been early in the Carter administration. At this point, they may as well start retiring the Nickel too, which also costs far more than it's worth to produce.

They penny will still exist because there are so many in circulation. They just won't be minting anymore, meaning that we will still be using them. At some point we will phase them out and possibly round prices.05 or.10 cents. Not a big a big deal.

Believe it or not but it is a "tax" on the consumer. They might be annoying but removing the denomination means that the store instead gets to keep the value themselves and possibly round up to get even more from you. The more "granular" the currency is the fairer the trade becomes for the consumer.

The biggest "feature" of pennies that I would miss- if this comes to pass- is when we visit various tourist spots in the country and make a "smashed penny" souvenir of the place for two quarters plus the penny that gets smashed into the commemorative token of the visit, so, a 51--cent souvenir. That is not really accurate. We will stop minting pennies because the sheer cost to make a penny, well, costs way more than a penny. We have BAZILLIONS of TONS of pennies in mints, vaults, warehouses, etc. There is no penny shortage. You also cannot do away with pennies, they are required for all transactions involving money. However, the lifespan of coinage is 100x that of paper/cloth currencies, so, there is no shortage of coinage.
