Why do people on probation associate with others also on probation or parole?

My sister and my mom’s boyfriend are on probation. All the “friends “ they associate with are on probation or parole too? How do they know what a person on probation looks like. How can they tell? Do they have like a radar or something? Why can’t they try to find positive influences?

Maybe they recognise eachother from or meet near to the places you go for probation meetings or something. Maybe it's just how similar types of people end up drawn to each other cos of shared interests or a vibe? Maybe it is like a radar lol. Like they say gay people somehow "know" another gay person. As for positive influences? You know the other person's family probably thinking same about your family members. That they are the bad influences. It's probably because people are judgmental so in these cases only someone "in the same boat" can emphasise and understand. Maybe "positive" influential people avoid "negative" bad people who make bad choices?

I hope they all can BE positive people and turn themselves around from their mistakes.

most likely they frequent the same places, share the same habits or routines. If your mom and sister drink or do other substances then that may be how they’re meeting these people. How old is your sister?

Ummmm... I'm gonna go out on a limb here but maybe it's because people who have never been to prison won't associate with them while someone who has been to prison can relate to their situation. Radical shit, I know.

As for how they find each other, they probably know each other from jail or AA meetings.
