We need to enforce the limits of the Federal Constitution. For 100+ years a lawless conspiracy between federal politicians has made the limits of document largely unenforceable, while serving as intended to allowing the same federal politicians to rule on any and all subjects without limits.

This has had the predictable effect of allowing them to set us against each other in forcing us to fight in every election and bidding wars over every new and old issue of their control. Thus making themselfs both more powerful on net and less accountable on any particular issue in any given election.

Thus making federal politicians very powerful, rich, and with an enormous advantage over challengers. While the states they represent are ever more bitterly divided over every election. Often finding they get little from the efforts of their vote regardless.

Great question , and I think the biggest problem is the polarisation of US politics , with just a few swing states , due to a plethora of reasons over the years including the creation of various gerrymander seats/ zones , people see it like a football match , rusted onto a particular side , it just can't work like that , every state should be a swing state , and the parties ( both ) need to move and evolve , easily said , but this is the real reason behind the question , the United States , needs to be actually united.

US problem isn't low birthrate or lack of resources, it's lack of homogeneity. You can't fight ethnocentrism with ideology like liberals try to do, this doesn't work, you can't fight it with rationalization of cultural independent merit like right wingers try to do. US will divide no matter how people in power will try to keep it together. Roman empire did it too and divided in western and eastern empire. Western empire got conquered by germanic tribes, eastern empire lasted 400 years longer.

The roman empire was nearly always at war if not with their neighbors then putting down some kind of internal rebellion.
Rome was founded and acknowledged by Romans as explicitly a empire for the benefit for Rome itself, Not its provinces basically all of which were conquered in war by the Rome and often in enough since in rebellion.

The provinces had to largely gang up on Rome to get Rome to respect any of their rights and Rome still won, then gave them a little to make future rebellion less likely. In practice however Rome remained in charge and the city itself ran everything even if they nominally let certant Provencals have a vote if they went to Rome to do it.

America is a union of States for mutual benefit, Washington D. C. is a city we created and ultimately can and will abolish. We don't even let the inhabit thereof have a say per A1S8C16 because we don't want them inhibiting our control of the city.

Basically America is the opposite of the roman empire constitutionally speaking in how power is wield.

We really only took a few key ideas from them, broadly speaking republicanism the idea of divided power a constitution.

If we followed the roman ideas, we would have already conquered North America and Europe, and probably South America as well. America would also economically look a lot more like the Spanish empire.

No America is far too large geographically and demographically to ever have or sustain cultural homogeneity. We came close in the midcentery via mass media and reduced immigration for decades. But even then there were significant differences.

The problem with scale is geographic diversity, the land defines the industry which defines the culture and the values.
With trade both in ideas via the language and goods & services making such industries what they are in being most efferent.

This is why on a larger scale Canada and the USA are basically the same people on the larger scale on which they are united together. Thou they differ significantly internally and have been set against each-other in teams much like the same politicians have done the people within each country.

It’s no longer a state vs state thing but more of a blue collar vs white collar (trade school vs degree education levels) which makes a civil war improbable but it could take the form of a coup depending how far things get pushed and who manages to court the military leaders more effectively.
