It's wrong to generalize. There is no overall public perception of law enforcement. Some people like it, some people hate it, some people fear it, and some people just ignore it.

As a white person, I regard them with respect. They're sort of like garbage collectors. Nobody wants to go around taking out the trash, but someone has to do it.

Public, there is no such thing, it varys from thankfulness to wanting them all gone.
