so those are not back, and they're still extinct, so... how these hybrids are going to develop... is anybody's guess

That's true. They just have some dire wolf characteristics. In the end, they are just big dogs. And dogs are very adaptable. So I think they will be fine and maybe quite happy. It's not like they brought back velociraptors.

Aside from the whole "not actually dire wolves" but I think if you're going to bring back extinct creatures maybe start by bringing things like the dodo 🦤 first rather than apex predators...

They haven't, it's fake news. They're just grey wolves with dire genes added to give the appearance of dire wolves. There's an article in new scientist about it.

True. The article I shared explained that, as well.
They are wolves but about 1.25 times larger than gray wolves and the same size as the extinct red wold that they are also talking about bringing back.

The thing about these wolves is, they are dogs and dogs are very adaptable, so I don't think it is cruel to bring them back. And I doubt if their behavior will be any different from gray wolves.

I'm not necessarily against the idea of bringing back some species like Tasmanian tigers, Dodos, passenger pigeons, etc. I do think it would be cruel to bring back megafauna like smilodons, woolly mammoths, mastodons, giant sloths, etc. because their habitats are gone and they would be nothing more than lonely zoo oddities.
