Do you think the younger Southern people in the US are losing the “Southern culture”?

I’m talking about millennial and Gen Zer southerners. I have heard recently especially in North Carolina and Virginia that the southern accents are fading here.

Americans are highly mobile. I think the various regions are becoming less distinct. But there are still some pretty big cultural differences, and even language differences. I've lived in ten states - in the north, south, east, west and middle. Some of the differences are subtle and not noticeable without living there for a while. Other differences are pretty obvious.

I think it was during the 80s when we heard about large numbers of people from the north moving to the "sun belt". I don't even consider Florida to be a "southern" state any more, and hasn't been for a long time. Large numbers of people also moved to places like Atlanta, Texas, the tri-cities in NC, etc.

There is also the Internet which has not only caused a blending within the US, but worldwide. Young people grew up with this and don't know anything else. The Internet gives a false view that the world is much smaller than it really is. But we see a lot of things that are picked up from other places.

I think there will always be differences between different regions though. I certainly hope so. That's why people love to travel. They don't travel to see the same thing they have at home. They travel to see and experience something different.

There is an old TV show from the 1950s called Route 66. It was about two guys that rode around America in a Corvette working at different place and meeting local people and experiencing local culture. America was a lot less homogenous back then,. There were distinct differences between north and south,
Today everyone has eaten at McDonalds and watches the same TV shows. The country has fewerdiferences thann itdid.

Absolutely. Southern culture is largely villlified. My college roommate got a lot of disrespect and abuse because she came from the deep south.

I have a buddy in Virginia and he got a slight accent but he's also from Appalachia soooo
