Have you ever heard of the Franks?

Have I ever heard of Clovis? Charlemagne? Western Frankia? I have actually. :)
Interesting that the two strongest European countries France & Germany trace back to the division of Charlemagne's empire among his sons as I recollect.
This is begging for a mytake from you.
How come an Australian heard about this? Haha.
Well, France was the country most influenced by the Franks, politically and otherwise. In fact, even the name of our country comes directly from the Franc name.
Germany has developed other influences.
However, our people are a mixture of what Caesar called "the Gauls" with the Romans, which gave rise to the Gallo-Romans, and finally the Franks, who came to add to all that and impose their political domination.
Well I don't spend all my time contemplating the superiority of Aussie Rules Football over soccer.. :)
I am quite interested in this period of history in fact though the Fall of Rome always makes me sad. Actually last night as I was going to sleep, a podcast on the Franks came on but the historian was very dreary and didn't seem to have anything new for me.
So I quickly switched to the 'Boring History to Go to Sleep With' podcast. It is nicely sardonic and working for me. Mostly focused on how horrible your life would have been in various golden ages.
Yep. That whole region was once Gaul, comprised of part of today's Germany as well. I think the history of Gaul may be my most favorite in Europe, because it seemed like an underdog region compared to all the glamorous history of Rome and the UK.
But anyway, yes, have heard of the Franks.
Yes it's where France gets it's name from. (We actually still pronounce France as Frank)
The French are actually Germans because that's where there Frank's originally came from.
Fun fact it was only Near the beginning of the 19th century, the French government began to pursue policies with the end goal of eradicating the other Gaulish languages. Elites spent a long time convincing the western populace that they weren’t who they were and many English people still think they are just Anglo-Saxons.
The Anglo saxons were the only group to make a significant contribution to the British gene pool. Most Romans were drawn from all over the empire not just Italy so it's impossible to say how much came from them, particularly since Britons at the time were already mix of French and Spanish. Most of our Scandinavian and Italian DNA comes from the 18th century onwards.
Same in Wales. Saesneg/Saeson (saxon)=English. It was only the outbreak of WW1 that saw the English drop referencing their Anglo-Saxon heritage.
I highly disagree considering Danes came into the land heavily at one point and a decent amount of Normans too. After Vikings becan to conquer parts of England and even work their way amongst the noble ranks Danes came in tens of thousands. Normans came after they conquered England on 1066. Britons couldn't be a mix of French but maybe Gaul. Francia didn't become a kingdom until after the Roman's left. The Saxons took control over the Britons right after the Romans left.
Outside of parts of Scotland the vikings left little genetic mark, they ruled most of England but rarely interbred. The saxons get demonised as invaders but there's virtually no evidence for mass warfare. As for Britons according Romans writers Magnus stripped the land of its warriors and the flower of its youth to fight in Europe. Granted land in France there was a mass migration there. The Normans therefore were a mix of both vikings and Britons.
There's been several DNA studies which prove me right. Norman's DNA and viking DNA is the same, Norman means north man
yea a bit, though i barely know anything about them. like i just know two three facts and about clovis

Quite a while back, I read a history of Gaul that began with pre-history and went all the way up to the death of Charlemagne. So yes, I have definitely heard of the Franks.

Yes, the Germanic tribe that conquered France forming the French kingdom, the French nobility claimed descent from them.
Germanic tribe that diluted their strong and proud blood of Wotan with weak and abominable blood of Celts.
Some dude named Charles, whose grand father was a hammer, had idiots for sons and blew up the family business and history was never the same...
Was it a bunch of guys named frank.
I’m joking they were basically photo French.
Yes, early tribes who settled what we now call France.

As in Anne Frank, who with her family hid from the Nazis for two years before being discovered and sent to Auschwicz?
Yep, all I can remember, they are germanic. After the fall of Rome, held some power. That's better than nothing!
Yes, they are who France is named after. They settled in what is now France and Belgium.
