Was decoupling sex from reproduction a good or bad thing for society overall?

With the introduction of contraceptives and abortions having children is no longer a given in a relationship and has allowed for more freedom in some sense but has this freedom benefited or harmed us?

It has certainly thrown a spanner into the population growth but at the same time the population growth has collapsed because we WANTED it to collapse so its difficult to say that its a bad thing either.

The way I see it sexual education, abortion and contraceptives was a step in the right direction but we are not done yet and we need to address how to make people want kids in the future.
