Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey gave a grim and deeply disturbing warning that shocked many across the nation. As protests against the Trump administration broad immigration raid continue across the country, mainly in California, where thousands have taken to the streets in mainly peaceful demonstrations, tensions have soar following Trump’s deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles. Ivey issued his warning to protesters. "So, I'm gonna break it down for you, all right, and if somebody wants to know what I mean by turn violent, all right, this is what I mean," he began. "If you resist lawful orders, you're going to jail. Let me be very clear about that." "If you block an intersection or a roadway in Brevard County, you are going to jail. If you flee arrest, you're going to go to jail tired because we are going to run you down and put you in jail," he said. His language then quickly escalated into violent threats. "If you try to mob rule a car in Brevard County, gathering around it, refusing to let the driver leave, in our county, you're most likely going to get run over and dragged across the street." He went on, "If you spit on us, you're going to the hospital and in jail. If you hit one of us, you're going to the hospital and jail, and most likely get bitten by one of our big, beautiful dogs that we have here." Then came his most chilling line: "If you throw a brick, a fire bomb, or point a gun at one of our deputies, we will be notifying your family where to collect your remains at, because we will kill you, graveyard, dead." "We're not going to play. This has got to stop," Ivey said. "You're watching what's taking place out there. You're seeing police officers that are being attacked, being spit on, being put in harm's way just for doing their jobs. You're seeing ICE agents that are being targeted for doing their jobs, and you're seeing obstructionists that are doing all of this, standing in the way of law and order."

Cops have a hard enough job to do without having liberal morons getting in the way. Arresting somebody is one of the most dangerous things a cop can do. There is always something that can go wrong. The suspect could be armed. An accomplice could be armed. Having another variable in the mix increases the danger. And blocking the road while people are out there trying to make a living is just being an asshole. If you interfere with a fire truck or an ambulance you could be putting lives in danger.

The Sheriff has warned them all. Now it is up to them. They should keep in mind however that Florida is not California and Ron DeSantis is not Gavin Newsom.

honestly, it's about time someone said this. Blocking streets costs lives when it prevents emergency personnel from helping people. It is not okay, and it is not "peaceful". It's a crime.

Everything he just did there is going to provoke more outrage and violence from the protesters. Law enforcement is put in the street for a reason, because they are sent there to stop a riot, to prevent building being burned, cars being burned etc. If you are stupid enough to assault one of them WHAT the fuck do you expect them to do... stand there and let you assault them?

Problem: That is not how people work. When you are a police in a protest or riot situation then it is your job to manage that crowd. In fact, your actions as a police officer in that situation is probably the single most important factor between the protest remaining peaceful or it developing into a violent riot.

The presence of police and its actions will almost always have a counterproductive result on the state of the protest. Just having the police there will increase the aggression or size and if you use the police against the protesters such as pushing them from one location to another, that also increases their aggression and potentially numbers.

So, if for the sake of argument there is a protest outside of a federal building then the police has to protect that building. Its a case of being backed into a corner for the police. In a situation like this they might be forced to establish a shield wall to try block access between the protest and the federal building.

However, as stated above, every action from the police will have a negative reaction from the protest. Having a shield-wall, even if there is a valid reason, will attract a crowd of protesters and they will begin antagonize the police in the wall. Worst case they might start approaching and/or throwing things. However, if the police responds to this by firing back then they just keep escalating further and further until you have tanks rolling through the streets firing live ammunition into crowds.

Simply put, that is not an acceptable outcome. As such the police is very limited in what they can do if they want to limit the damage. They can only move at key times where the costs does not outweigh the benefits or in cases where they are forced to such as to save life or to protect key objectives such as a federal building. That means that police sometimes has to stand by and watch protesters torch cars and throw concrete at their shield wall because that is preferable to the alternative which would happen if they stepped in to try prevent it. And yes, that also means they sometimes have to serve as the punching bag for bad people.

Everyone else has the right to defend themselves. What they can do to defend themselves depends on level of threat. With the most serious threats that are life threatening, they can use lethal force. It's the same right that the rest of us have. If someone is a serious threat to my life I will use ANY means to stop that threat. I have a right to do that, and so do the cops, and so does everyone else.

The sheriff clearly spelled out different levels of threat with different appropriate responses to the level of threat. With the most serious response to the most serious threats, and lesser responses to lesser threats.

Very fucked up. I'm not ACAB or anything, but law enforcement officers should always uphold the safety and well-being of all citizens, not just the ones that are kind and respectful, in the highest regard.

Moreover, preemptively threatening protesters, specially in a movement that has been, for the most part, a peaceful one, is really problematic. These people are fighting for the loss of their friends, family, and constitutional rights, threatening to literally kill people for destruction of property or disrespect is literally confirmation of their exact fears. Deescalation on all levels is the only appropriate approach to protest, bringing lethal weapons to a protest is the absolute WORST choice they could have made.

I think that what this amounts to is a law enforcement official making public death threats, which I believe is actually against the law. I don't think making death threats is covered by the Free speech clause of the Constitution. This man needs to be arrested as he is a danger to others.
