Life has never been easier for humans than it is right now. That’s a categorically undeniable fact.
If you’ve studied greed at all, then you should also study addiction. They have remarkably similar markers. I don’t say this to alleviate any accountability for wrongdoing. Wrongs must be admitted and amends must be made. It’s all part of the program.
But recognizing the markers for addiction in greed means we can stop describing it as “evil” and recognize it for one or more mental defects causing a person to make choices that are ultimately harmful to their family, friends and even themselves. The biggest obstacle to making the connection is how we define “success” in the west. We tend to perceive any behavior that begets monetary rewards as inherently positive. We quite literally glorify corrupt corporations and underworld criminal organizations because of their abilities to amass wealth.
Greed is a disease. It’s not going away until we treat it as such. That is ultimately means we have to reconsider our definition of success, and learn to put humanitarian qualities ahead of profits.
We ain’t ready for that yet.

I think what he’s getting at is just that life can be made pretty much straightforward by us human beings, we actually make life convoluted for ourselves by focusing upon the root of all evil……. money!
