It's just a tax but has the effect of evening or tilting the odds in a global creation space to even the odds or possibly move manufacturing. I think that's the idea... collect $ to govt and draw investment $. The other part is... will consumers buy from someone they despise, don't trust, or don't like? If manufacturing and investment comes to USA for long period, I think it was positive and worked. If it's temporary, then we are rearranging the deck chairs of the Titanic.
People gripe about these tariffs but there were tariffs before Trump, it's just they are doing many of them at one time and it seems more chaotic negotiated in public vs behind the scenes.

Secondly, Trump just reaffirmed the exact same investment deal that's been going on for the last 4 years under the Biden administration, which is the same deal that went on under the Obama administration with slightly different numbers. What's bad for the USA, well only for the "people" of the USA but great for corporate billionaires and investors, is that LNG exports to the EU are going up. That means less supply available for the US in winter, when your prices will skyrocket. Add to that the Northeast energy tariff imposed by Canada for states like NY, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont and New England (which gets 13% of its energy from Canada), and you can expect to have a fit over costs this winter.
