What motel is the worst to rent at?

I've stayed at hundreds of motels. I don't think there is much pattern. Unless you really trust the motel, this is why you should look at the room before buying. I've been in big chains that were pretty bad, and small mom-and-pop places were were great.

My criteria is that I don't care about it being old or having a lot of facilities. I want it to be clean, not smell, have good hot showers, not have paper thin walls where you can hear everything your neighbor does, have a comfortable bed, and not be too run down. Oh yea - I don't want to go outside to get to the toilet and shower - I've been in a couple of motels where you had to do that.

I actually like small independent motels. Just look at the room first.

Since I never make reservations, because I have no idea when I'll stop for the night, sometimes I take whatever I can get.

There's no uniformity by brand. They are all owned independently. The brand just provided reservations and advertising.

Why would you rent a hotel? Why not just get your own place?

Usually the small indepentently owned ones. The larger chains have higher standards to maintain and a higher cash flow to do that with.

I haven't stayed at too many motels, but my worst experience was at a Motel 6, if I remember correctly it was in Nevada. Though if you include hotels. The worst was the Omni in Dallas.
