What is the worst city to drive in?

For me Chicago and Detroit so far.

Detroit... so far, second would be Ann Arbor/etc area. In the rural areas (Milan, Dundee), people drive worse, probably because it's rural, so who's gonna catch you? I've been sideswiped - cars constantly tried getting in the lane I was in (right next to me) (How do you NOT see me?). I've been cut off (and casually flipped off) a lot more than when I actually lived in Detroit (and I'm a safe driver). Over like... letting people in. or slowing down at a blinking red to make sure it's safe. Many people seem quite enraged in general. Maybe because they have to drive more in that mess.

Detroit is confusing as hell (I would assume Washington DC is also hard to navigate, as they're all based on a similar "pinwheel" or bicycle wheel spoke pattern).

But in many areas of Ann Arbor, the street signs conflict. Certain alleyways, which look like normal streets, will suddenly narrow; and then you'll get stuck having to drive 7 blocks in one lane, because all the streets that you're supposed to be able to turn are blocked off with construction.

In certain areas, some streets that are one way supposedly facing the opposite direction (away from you), but the arrows on the street point towards you... did they just change the direction and not clean off the paint, or is the sign loose... or wrong?

You also often have to take part of US-23 to get in and out of the area. There's heavy construction for at least 20 miles in each direction, my guess. And it will rattle and grind your car and shake your fillings. You better have a nice car. within about half an hour of Ann Arbor heading to AA/Ypsi or out, I'd often see probably about 10-20 vehicles stopped, off to the side, because a pothole destroyed a few tires, the construction ruined or shook something loose, or the car hit construction junk that got to the middle of the road - whatever. It's been that way for years. And they route you in odd ways that the GPS apps can not keep up with the changes they make to the routes. Even the parts that are repaved are bad.

A few family members are in Ann Arbor - for a while, I lived about two hours away... but driving, you'd better figure on two and a half to three hours, at least, either having to pull over from the stress, or to try to get GPS back on point or get your bearings, fix a tire or wait because of the bad traffic jams - something. The Ann Arbor Metro area has been a mess for years. My brother, who doesn't live in the area, has had to go back and forth more recently (and he LOVES to drive) has complained about the people and the roads. When we all meet for holidays, he's always late (construction reroutes or various jams), and he always looks frazzled or like he's got PTSD from it. I really don't get the attraction some family and friends have with the area, though I don't think they have to drive in it very often.

Wasn't there long, but NYC. Not just that the streets have tons of construction everywhere, but that most people there seem like really bad drivers so tons of accidents, backups, etc

Of the cities I've been in. Its Indianapolis. Not cause of the traffic but because the roads, and I use the word "road" very generously, are in complete tatters.

As far as actual traffic I'd have to agree with you about Chicago. Place is terrible.

Chicago area. 3 main reasons. 1. Drivers have not mastered the ability to "zipper" in and out of multiple traffic lanes. 2. The signage is some of the most confusing l've ever seen (and I've been to almost all the states with the exception of the New England states). 3. There are only two seasons- winter season, and construction season. Interesting that the only (last time I heard) taxing body in the state of ILL that operates at a "profit" was the ILL Tollway System.

Boston. It is a very old city and a lot of the streets started out as cow paths and we know how bad cows are at planning cities. Recently bike lanes have been implemented making it even worse.
