Do girls like WWII history?

Met a lot of guys that like War history, the battles, take heart to those that risked their lives and the so many civilians lost.

Girls... haven't met many girls that like going to the museums, seeing the old tanks and battlefields... they seem to be more forward focused.

Here's some history I didn't know in the battle for Normandy, a terrible fight over hill 112. Thousands of Welsh and Germans died fighting over the highland over Caen. The Welsh were terribly out gunned and paid the price with thousands dead. If only there were a good movie or book covering the battle... here's a brief video.

In the battle for Normandy, 20,000 civilians were killed, many when General Montgomery ordered bombing of the area, which was likely, unnecessary in hindsight. French suffered greatly.

In USA we always hear of the USA sacrafices, this story was new to me.

Do you like this kind of history, can you learn from it?

As men I think we can envisage ourselves being in this situation but girls possibly cannot envisage being themselves in being in a murderous battle.

A girlfriend had a WW2 bomber pilot and a coast watcher in her family when I met her. She didn't seem to comprehend what they had done and what they had gone through.

Quite ordinary men doing extraordinary deeds. When I explained she did start to understand but I don't think she could relate to being at risk of harm that they had been in.

Feminists certainly can't. They just complain that when the boys came home, after all those years of being shot at, they unfairly got the jobs that women had been doing.

If I have a bad work day, I think back to that WW2 bomber pilot and say to myself "at least nobody is shooting at me when I go to work" to put it in perspective.

I was fortunate to meet a WW2 American vet. I was on a Melbourne tram and saw a very elderly American couple with maps out, so I asked if I could help and see them to their stop. For conversation I asked what brought them to Melbourne and the guy said he had been on R&R in Melbourne during WW2 and wanted to see it again. I asked where he had been.

He quietly said Quadal. Wow. Had to be the best part of 100 - I guess nothing could kill him after Quadalcanal..

I feel very privileged to have had that chance encounter. And humbled.

any idea what they did like about history? the fashion changes?

One was focused on African-American history, another on historical preservation.

Even I find economic and financial history more interesting, and I’m a veteran (albeit one with degrees in economics and finance rather than history).

I've learned to be interested in history, the hows and whys, moreso... what are the drivers for the events, the courage, etc. see upcoming postings...

It’s really interesting. I was actually thinking about doing a history degree for my next one, but I think I might do something else instead.

yeah i like history and just learning things in general. i just dont have the time to really go in-depth anymore. used to spend my lunches at school reading and sometimes it was history

i find the minor stuff more interesting rather than the battles. like karl and walter's process of designing SS uniforms or the soviet night witches

that's cool, discovery and process... imagining, innovation. There's a lot we don't know that has already been discovered, it's fun. Thanks for sharing.
SS uniforms were unique? Im still amazed way back before that they figured out how to make clothes.

Most don't. I've a degree in history, not that its done me much good.

combine it with psychology and possibly economics or business and you've got something! history on it's own is mainly being an educator after masters degree.

Yes, history is only useful with a teaching degree. It was a degree i did at college while I was doing my btech. Not something you should go to university for 4 years to study with a student loan.

No, if you want to go someplace to pick up girls , a WW2 museum would not be tops on my list.

There is a group of pilots that have restored some WW2 planes like B-29 and a P-51. They tour the country in the summer. I have seen them once. The hardware is amazing considering they were built in the 1940s.
