When body positivity movements incline or perpetuate being overweight, are we helping or harming people's fulfillment in life?

I don't get why this is still an issue.. Leave people alone to weigh what they want. Reason this became a thing is people constantly making bigger people the brunt of all jokes, make them feel like shit and say stuff about them and whatnot to the point they stop leaving their house and the issue gets worse. The ones I notice who care about this issue most is American males.. which I don't get because you all pay your own health care and if you aren't attracted to bigger people then go look for someone you are attracted to lol. It seems it is mainly just a male problem because woman are not conforming to the beauty standards like men want, because most guys don't go around telling their buds hey you're a fat ass I think you should lay off the burgers.. they tend to just leave them alone yet bully woman. Like the amount of times I seen fat men put down fat woman online because "they can, because they don't depend on their looks" is dumb as fuck. And they think just cuz woman will fuck them because they have money somehow makes them better LOL. I have been skinny and fat yet my life has never felt fulfilled at either place so really weight doesn't play that big of a part on the matter. Men will make you feel like shit regardless of how you look.
I can only say that I would guess you haven’t spent much time around men amongst their buddies. Nearly all we do is talk trash to one another and believe me - if me or one of my buddies started packing on the pounds it would be absolutely the butt of jokes and teasing.
Whether society projects an unrealistic beauty standard on women is another topic altogether, but it’s as female driven as it is male driven.
@Flatmanlewis Well I never had fat male friends so I guess that is why I never noticed it lol but my dad was chubby and his friends rarely said anything about his weight.. Men are the ones who make weight an issue tho.. most the time girls usually will leave you alone but it is men who enjoy bringing it up for no reason because men hate when woman are not sexually appealing to them, it's like it bothers them at their core lol.
Being skinny does not mean you will have a happy and fulfilling life. No weight can guarantee that, nor does being skinny mean you are actually healthy...but so many people sure think it automatically does. In fact, many praise anorexics who are literally skin and bones over someone who is overweight, because "at least she's thin." Ouch.
You aren't setting up someone up in either direction just because you tell them to do something you think will work for them. We all would love ourselves and our loved ones to be healthy (notice I didn't say skinny---but healthy), but they have to do that for themselves. Being at an unhealthy weight is not going to get solved because you go online and rant and rave that someone fat should lose weight. If that worked, then we could also do the same for the alcoholics and the drug abusers of the world---just tell them to stop and it'll all work out. The ads aren't going to do it weather preaching eat an apple or telling them they are beautiful just the way they are. Any chance comes from you wanting to make that change for yourself.
i consider "body positivity" one of many trends that can be labeled "toxic positivity". toxic positivity is when you avoid necessary critique just to avoid making someone feel bad. the thing is: "feeling bad" is pretty much psychologically necessary to motivate change. cause if you never feel bad about something, then why should you do anything about that something? and that's why i think it's toxic positivity. cause it takes away necessary motivation for positive change.
and for whoever may be offended by this: i'm not saying that you're a "lesser human" cause you're fat. yo are still absolutely a valuable human being with dignity and because of that, you should accept that not being fat would make your human life way more dignified for a way longer time in the long run. cause obese people die early and i would prefer you not to die early.
This is spot on. It’s the equivalent of telling my alcoholic uncle he should just keep drinking because he’s happier when he’s in a bar drinking. It’s a foolish illusion and false positivity.
@Flatmanlewis yeah and much like alcohol kills you relatively slowly over time, so does being overweight.
Their BIGGEST promoters died already from their problem. They die before they're even my age just to justify their gluttony and greed. At this point, if you want to call that healthy, have fun with it and die like them.
Meanwhile I'm mid 40's and fucking 19 year olds. Shame me for hitting the weights and and still fucking hot bitches they do... die before they're my age they do.
They're idiots obviously and winning the Darwin awards.

The bottom line is learning to accept yourself where you are in life. DNA is a great mixing bowl, the result are varied. We have no control over what it produces. I had this discussion with my Employer once concerning type one diabetes. Spotting it early, sterilizing those kids with the disease, so they could not pass it on. Sounded like a good idea to me. He told me that eliminating their ability to produce offspring would also limit the gene pool. There are many more traits that are passed along. Many of the worlds top intellectual contributors had health issues. We were evolved to be able to survive many different ecological catastrophes. What if the world we know now does not exist 200 years from now and food sources diminish? Those people with the ability to store carbohydrates ( the people who are overweight now) will likely be the only ones surviving.
"Hey your a fat fuck and you'll always be a fat fuck" call me crazy but that is a bad place to start any kind of long term journey.
The whole point of body positivity is dial it back take it one day at a time.
https://youtube.com/shorts/xXasEIz5gLw?si=7dhkBKMiuT3DyhdyThe issue (and problem) here is that when people feel complacent about being overweight as a result of the positivity, they then feel complacent about their health. The excess weight is not complacent at all and Instead, it makes them sick and ultimately kills them.
Be body positive all you want. Destroy your body, you own it. But I'm not gonna tell you you're beautiful or hot. You're unhealthy. And yeah, we allow these people to dodge accountability for their choices when we hide the truth from them.
Harming.
How is being unhealthy "helping"?
Society needs to get back to the way it was in the 60's and 70's when people were thin and fit.
Half of the USA is fat now. Not good at all.
I think we need to be stressing health positivity.
It isn't real, it's just pandering to various out groups for political gain. The people in charge of this stuff are laughing at these fat ass people and don't care if they die.
I think the idea of body positivity is great; however, the execution has been very faulty throughout the years. Of course like any normal human being I don’t think people should be discriminated against or mistreated for their body weight; although with that being said, if you’re unhealthy, you’re unhealthy. The acceptance of being extremely skinny and extremely overweight on social media has become wayyy too bizzare.
Harming.
Positive thing like healthy weight should be rewarded, negative things like obesity punished. This is how thing works since billions of years on this planet.
I feel like there should be a size limit ik im over weight and im working to lose some but I also don't feel like at my size i should have to feel ashamed whole working on it
You can love someone whose fat as a human being without giving them advice that’s KILLING them and is delusional. That doesn’t help
body positivity is dead now. but anyways i would say yes in the form body pos took in the 2020s. around 2015 it w
(accidentely clicked post)
around 2015 it was about women with handicaps, skin conditions, or who just didn't have perfect bodies not morbidely obese women staying obese. the latest form of it though was just keeping fat people fat and discouraging self improvement and calling it fatphobic. people should be encouraged to be at a healthy weight
we are setting them and ourselves for bigger life sentencing.
by accepting what is obviously not healthy we are encouraging obesity, heart desease, diabetes, cancers and other deseases that keep shortening humanity's life
Definitely harming. Being overweight has really bad health effects.
I will never encourage something so wrong to be something so right.
If only we just accepted the vegans from the beginning.
Raw vegan diets are likely to lack many important vitamins and minerals – namely vitamins B12 and D, selenium, zinc, iron, and two types of omega-3 fatty acids. This is because many of the foods that contain high levels of these vitamins and minerals come from animals – such as meat and eggs.
Let's not pretend veganism is a healthy lifestyle for most people, it leads to nutritional and hormonal disruptions. If we could get rid of seed oils and overly processed foods, I'm all for it. But let me eat my B12-rich, NY steak strip.
No, but you will feel lethargic, and your body could stop having periods. Every person will have different stages based on how their body reacts and is able to cope with deficiencies.
It's like they are fat and they want everyone else to celebrate it. It is sick, in my opinion.
We are infact not helping them their is a balance we should not insult mock or jest at anyone's body however we cannot agree that being obese is healthy.
Some people naturally have different body types and shapes and they should be comfortable in their own skin but yeah if someone is 400 pounds they shouldn’t be proud or celebrating that bullshit.
It depends on whether we are supporting obesity or not. If you're fat, you're fine.
I just know that by encouraging this,. we shorten their lifespan. And the world becomes a better place.
Body positivity should have only been for devastating injuries or mutations. The fact that it was made about fat people was a massive mistake.
You should always strive to be the best version of you. Deep down, everyone knows that being unhealthy isn't the best version.
Harming, but Lizzo is being viewed as the poster girl for female beauty.
absolute harm. It's disgusting that college kids are fat cows.
I think it is all okay, but if you walk a flight of stairs and breathe as if you ran a half-marathon, then it is a problem.
Depends, different people have different reactions to body positivity movement.
Harming for sure
Seems absurd to me.
It's a bad thing
Harming. Being fat is not healthy.
