No. Their reputation is exaggerated.
German shepherds, Rottweilers, English mastiffs, and quite a few other dog breeds have stronger bites. Those dogs are larger, too.

Many smaller dogs with weaker bite force are more aggressive.

Pit bulls used to be known as "nanny dogs" because they were smart, gentle, loyal and protective.
The dog on The Little Rascals and Our Gang was a pit bull.

A friend of mine had a pit bull that was the sweetest dog in the world. When it died, he got another one that was just as sweet.

They are not inherently unpredictable or aggressive. It depends on how they are raised.

Unfortunately, they do have a reputation for being fighters, so a lot of ass holes who want guard dogs buy them and train them to be mean.

It's another tricky one. They fall into the same category as loud stereos and home cinemas, motorbikes, fast (esp. modified) cars, guns, etc.
ie. There's nothing wrong with them per se, and there may even be valid reasons for some people to own them, but in practice, the kind of people they appeal to are overwhelmingly absolute dickheads, to the point where wanting any of these things is a good enough reason for you to not be allowed them (at which point, they may as well just be banned). Yes, it would be preferable to ban the dickheads instead, but that's easier said than done.

Yes, for the same reason the US has banned cock fighting. I’ve never seen dog fighting and I don’t want to. But I have seen cock fighting. These amazingly tall roosters are bred to kill each other. They're so vicious that the farmers have to put them in a cat carrier and put a veil over it so they can't see the other roosters. If they could see the other roosters, they would probably kill themselves trying to get out of the cage. None of the roosters died because the farmer on the losing and will throw in the towel.
Then both roosters are taken over to the medic who sews their torn faces up. The needles are insanely large because all they have to work with is kite string. The medic then reaches in scolding water with a pair of tongs and pulls out a very hot towel and wrap it around the rooster’s face. After you’ve endured the scolding water, the giant needles ain’t so bad.

Not necessarily. In my country these are called "listed dog breeds" and you can only get them if you can show you have experience with handling them and no pertinent police record.

I've never had one before, but any type of animal that could kill a child is probably safer to have in the country, rather than within city limits etc.

They serve no purpose other than inflating the owner's ego. There are multiple other dog breeds that fill the need of guard dogs. No use in keeping a breed around that can "snap".
