Scots, gaelic, Welsh, are still widely spoken. There's about 14 native British languages still spoken and for many people they are their first language. Many speak a mish mash of English plus another, words have moved in both directions over the centuries.

But there's an understanding that not everyone speaks your preferred tongue. A gaelic speaker might only use it with friends and family and speak English to strangers. England is by far the biggest country both on size and population, so you'd expect the English language to dominate.
