Are you FOR or AGAINST the DEATH PENALTY?

Question

In a trial where there is sufficient evidence to convict the person who caused the death of another, should the death penalty be available as a means of punishment?

In Highschool debate class, the teacher played a video showcasing death row and students would deliver arguments in favor or against the death penalty.

It honestly was hard for me to think of one or the other, so I researched more with videos covering both sides which again, have good arguments.

The statistic that scared me was like 200 prisoners on death row have been exonerated since mid 1970s because imagine all the innocent people we put to death because they had bad legal team, their evidence didn’t persuade the jury, profiling, etc.

I am leaning against the death penalty more than supporting it.

I support a limited use of the death penalty but it is certainly not warranted in all crimes that result in a death. FYI, I was a witness at a death penalty execution in 1985.

No. I think if you go down that route then sufficient evidence isn't enough, you need unequivocal proof.

Take the recent case of multiple baby killer Lucy Letby in the UK. Convicted by jury based on a mass of evidence but many, including medical experts, think she's innocent. I don't know if she is but can we take the risk of hanging an innocent person?

Plenty of innocent people in the past have been executed because juries and no doubt in countries with the DP they still are.

Personally I think a torture penalty would be better... one fitting whatever crime. Death isn't a punishment, it's a fact of life. We're all gonna die. So honestly I don't support the death penalty, just because I think there should be something worse.

I am in favor of the limited application of death penalty. Only for cases with the strongest possible evidence involving the worst crimes and/or irredeemable repeat offenders. There’s absolutely no doubt that we have put people to death who didn’t deserve it. Just as we have certainly let some who are deserving of capital punishment go free, or live for decades on taxpayers’ dollars despite having nothing of value to contribute in return.
With a track record like ours, i wouldn’t bat an eye at the permanent ban of capital punishment in the US. If we can’t do it right, we shouldn’t be doing it at all.

For it. Only in certain cases. Cases where it is 100% confirmed who committed the crime.

For example, this guy that just stabbed the Ukrainian woman on the train. It is a 100% fact he did it. We have the video footage. The defense will be he is insane or has mental issues or he had a rough childhood.

Kill that mother fucker.

Cases in which we do not know but a bunch of evidence implicates one person. There is always that remote chance someone innocent is being killed. Life in prison in those cases.

i think that generally speaking if something is morally wrong to do to a person, then it can't be morally right to do to a person as a punishment. i personally think killing a person is morally wrong. i would much prefer keeping them in prison forever and strongly compelling them to work to make some or all of the money back that they're costing the state.

Have some fun like putting sodium in their eyes or feed them a rubidium pellet or the historical methods like gladiators fighting to the death or having a bucket of rats placed on the stomach and heated until the rats burrow through the soft underside
Hell even sell them for trophy hunting

Why do we want to keep people alive with no death penalty? They took a life without thought. They can bring nothing of value to humanity. Why keep them alive, feed, medicate them for years if not decades, and get nothing in return but a lot of money spent in exchange for nothing

Thank you for asking this question. I was in favor of the death penalty. Now my views have changed. If we do have a death penalty, I would like to see inmates in very uncomfortable Spartan facilities. No creature comforts, the same slop food served at every meal. When the inmate is tired of the conditions, they get to go to a chamber and kill themselves with a reasonably painless method to be determined. We could use seized fentanyl to overdose inmates who are ready to die…

I don't think the state should have the power to take someone's life. Plus, studies show it doesn't actually deter crime more than life imprisonment. I'd rather see resources go toward rehabilitation programs.

I like to have my cake and eat it too. I can kill without getting my hands bloody via sterilization. I suppose I'd pay for taking part in that but the penalty the universe decreed would be less harsh.
