Should murderers and other brutal criminals be executed?

1. the justice system is imperfect (duh)
2. someone being wrongly executed is... troubling
3. even when the imperfect system gets it "right" due to the beautiful judicial system in America the death penalty costs significantly more, after all the appeals and judicial hoops, than it does to just put someone away in prison for life
4. there's no legit evidence that the death penalty deters crime

So, logically, the death penalty just doesn't work in Murrrica. I understand the emotion of it. If someone ruthlessly killed a friend/sibling/family member, I'd want them to fry... but like the judicial system in general, we have to take a step back from injecting our own emotions and think about what makes sense in the bigger picture.

There DO exist some mentally-damaged individuals devoid of empathy whose behavior is like that of a rabid dog. A 'three strikes' violent offender ISN'T prone to change. We don't 'warehouse' rabid dogs for their lifetime; we euthanize them for the public's safety. A 'superMax' incarceration works out to being a safety risk for the corrections officers AND costs the Tax Payer $65,000/yr. ... and for what?
To assuage society's conscience that they're being merciful by not ENDING a self-professed Predator?

I’m against the death penalty. I don’t believe that any human should kill anyone, for any reason.

It makes no sense to say that killing is illegal, but only when certain people do it. Government employees shouldn’t have the right to do that either. The same law should go for everyone.

Yes. Besides, they'd be doing limited prisons and the environment a favor. Overpopulation control. Killing people is horrible, but it can be justified if there's nothing else to do.

I've spoken to some seriously fucked up prisoners as one of our counsellors also did consoling at Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire, I went along as note taker and as part of counselling experience.

Whitemoor houses around 500 of the most dangerous prisoners in the UK. The prison has a Dangerous Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD) unit and a Close Supervision Centre (CSC). The centre is a prison inside the prison. Whitemoor does not accept any prisoners who are serving less than 4 years.

Anti death penalty. The government can and DOES make mistakes executing innocent people. we cannot allow them to have this power over the population no matter how much we hate the truly vile pieces of shit that walk our planet. Human beings are fallible and as such make mistakes. but allowing more innocent to accidentally be put to death is something we should never support as a society.

Life in prison for the truly awful is my preferred choice in our world. in a perfect world we could 100% execute the right person every time. but we do not live in such a world.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like the death penalty was the deterrent we thought it was.
You see murderers almost not afraid of being killed in-action. Or the murder suicides that happened with a few school shootings. It's also disproportionately used against people of color, even likely innocent people have been sent to death.

With President Biden it could end up that the Boston Marathon bomber only goes through with death from fed death row, but they were advocating for that sentence to go through and because of the Supreme Court action.

Yes! What's the fucking pint of keeping them alive and surviving on OUR dime for who knows how many decades when they stand no chance of ever getting out? They are a MENACE to society, they've PROVEN they can't live in peace and civility with others so, GET RID OF THEM! What the fuck are we saving them for? It's like getting some milk out of the fridge and noticing it smells bad so, you put it back in the fridge hoping it'll be better tomorrow!

It’s better than easting hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep them locked up and fed three times a day until they die. If they commit heinous crimes, why wouldn’t you execute them? Nobody would feel bad about some robber getting killed by store clerk, or a murderer getting shot by police while fleeing or something. Why is it then that we have to jail them forever if we catch them alive? Death Row inmates who are proven without a doubt to have committed a crime should be executed no slower than a year. People serving 45years+ should just be executed. That’s wayy too long and cost too much to jail someone.

I don't think you've done much research on the death penalty, 98% of the people that are on death row have been on for 15+ / 20+ years, and 80% of them are likely to avoid the death sentence and serve the rest in prison to die naturally or what not, rather than executed. People think it's a simple solution but in reality, they are costing the tax payers just as much as a non lifer in prison.

Scott dozier is a prime example of it... he ended his own life in 2019.

Pro if fully proven. Point is they often don't prove it but kill them anyway. If they could then I have no problem with it like ted bundy for example who cares, John gacy, Manson, nightstalker. You put these guys on death row I will buy a seat to watch.

I am pro death penalty. There have been many instances where people have been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole and somehow they get released and end up re-offending. The death penalty if applied correctly will prevent that. I still expect the Boston Marathon bomber to be released by some liberal judge who think that he was just a misunderstood kid.

Depends on the crime.

The main problem is that under the current system, something like 30% of cases are acquitted or reduced on appeal. Obviously if there is a death penalty then you can't posthumously redact the sentence.

It's the main reason they are getting rid of the death penalty in many places. The legal system is just not good enough.

I believe that, if the legal system convicts someone of a serious crime and the penalty is death, they should be executed quickly (not wait 15 years) on network TV, and streamed live over the Internet. Just like olde England and France, where heads were chopped off in public.

If we, as a society, can do that, then the death penalty should remain. If not, it should go. We should not continue to execute people behind closed doors, in secret, with only a small number of official witnesses.

The subject of the death penalty is far too complex and difficult from different points of view that answering by "pro" or "anti" seems stupid to me. The real question in a society would rather be: what to do with criminals really too dangerous to be released one day back among free citizens. Alternatives as for instance lifelong imprisonment, lobotomizing, chemical castration, seem as cruel, if not worse than the death penalty.

Always a tough question for me. Part of me says it's hypocritical to punish someone by killing them because they killed someone else, and killing is bad. The other part of me says that some people's crimes are just so heinous that they don't deserve to be among the living, even in a prison. In a way, you're giving their soul another chance to get it right sooner than later! The other thing that irks me is the taxpayer cost of keeping some mass murderer alive.

In cases where rehabilitation is unlikely or the crime too extreme yes.

Not because I am looking for vengeance, but because society shouldn't be permanently burdened by someone like that.

Also if someone is in for life it would be humane to offer them a quick alternative. Perhaps some of the money saved could go to next of kin and victims or their families instead.

1. I think life in prison is a far worse punishment.

2. If there is any evidence that proves that they were innocent all along, there would be a chance for them to redeem themselves in the eyes of the law. If they are killed, that ship has sailed.
