Yeah, addiction is considered a mental illness and some people are genetically predisposed to having addictive personality. A child of an addict is, what, 50% more likely to be one themselves?

Addiction is widely recognized as a disease. Rehabilitation clinics think it is a disease of the mind and body. I had more success with AA, which treats addiction as a disease of the spirit. I’m part of the majority. More people find long term success with their struggles in sobriety through 12-step programs than any other form of treatment. It’s not even close.
If you’re struggling with addiction, find a 12-step program. If you know someone who is struggling with addiction, find Alanon. It’s a branch of AA that helps people living with addicts find the resources they need to not let their relative, friend suffer or spread misery through their active addiction.
