Why are there so many unwanted pregnancies?

There are almost a million abortions every year in the US, and there are also many cases where the mother chose to keep the child. I don't understand how it happens so much when there are so many birth control options. How does it happen so much?

The birth control pill, feminism, the sexual revolution.

For all of history people married young, have families. Biologically, having sex meant choosing to have kids.

Once the pill came along, you could just screw for the sake of screwing and not get pregnant. You could get really slutty and careless with sex when you used to have to take more seriously and get married first or risk a bastard child with no support.

Feminism told women being moms wasn't fulfilling, having a man take care of you and provide a home was enslavement. Oppression. Having jobs and stressing all day like the men was fulfillment. Don't get married. Have a hoe phase of just sleeping around and trying out lots of men and debase experiences. That is what leads to a happy life and fulfillment. Don't have kids ever or wait until 28-35 and have one instead of 4 or 5.

Well, the plan isn't foolproof. Pregnancies can still occur but instead of the man you want to spend the rest of your life with it is probably from some hookup that doesn't want anything to do with you. So the kid has to pay with their life because you want to keep living the wild, free single life.

I’d say the majority of these occur in people less than 30 years old. As that’s my generation we are still in some ways figuring out life and not always making responsible decisions. As you mentioned BC is available but some BC is not natural. Also alcohol and other substances can alter the brain and impact decision making. While it may seem logical to wear a condom it’s not required and a decision to “risk it” may be made in the heat of the moment.


Bottom line is you could ask the same question about drunk driving deaths or a hand full of other issues with people under 30 and get similar answers.

Birth control isn’t 100% effective. The best number is 91% or 99% “if used correctly” but a lot of people end up not knowing that they’re using it wrong. Condoms are 98% effective, which means 2 out of every 100 people using a condom while having sex still get pregnant. Think of how many people have sex in a day alone, that’s a pretty high number.
There’s also the fact that a lot of women don’t know about birth control, or as is most often the case in the US specifically, can’t afford it.
And while not the majority, a significant percentage of those terminations are from unviable pregnancies, meaning children that were wanted by the parent but couldn’t be brought to term without killing the mother and/or already being dead in the womb because of unforeseen health complications.

Not knowing about birth control? Also not a significant problem.

Not being about to afford birth control is NOT a significant contributing factor. Condoms are cheap, and would prevent a majority of unplanned pregnancies, IF used.

Not knowing they are using it incorrectly? Ummm, yeah, not so much. Does it happen? Sure, but again, not a significant factor.

Unviable pregnancies are irrelevant in unplanned pregnancies. Think about it.

The bottom line is this... the vast majority of unplanned pregnancies are a result of irresponsibility on the part of the sexual partners, and their parents.

There are number of reasons-

• Lack of knowledge regarding sex and risk of pregnancy.
• Lack maturity and are irresponsible, so they engage in unprotected sex
• They couldn't afford protection/birth control.
• There's still chances of pregnancy as protection isn't 100% effective.
• I have also heard of some cases where the girl got so drunk and were drugged (without the girl knowing), that they won'r even remember what happened last night.

Because sexual education and access to birth control in USA is probably the worst in any developed country which means that teenagers and young adults are more likely to make mistakes and screw up their lives when they can't afford to support a family.

The fact is, in the vast majority of unplanned pregnancies there was zero birth control used, and if people were responsible about using birth control there would only be a small fraction of the unplanned pregnancies there actually are.

Birth control and plan b is expensive so if you can't afford it or get insurance that covers it, then you're out of luck.

Then you also have mistakes, failed birth control, and rapes. All can and do routinely cause unwanted pregnancies.

Shit, I had 3 and only one was caused by my negligence. My birth control failed two times.

My cousin didn't intend to get pregnant. She was in a sexual relationship and taking antibiotics at the time she got pregnant. Antibiotics and birth control stop the latter from working. She got pregnant and had a daughter. Her daughter is a delight, but that's one way using a birth control option won't work.

When you can get an abortion on any street corner you do not have to be as careful with contraceptives. Also there is not the stigma about giving birth out of wedlock. Girls actually put the birth notices in the newspaper.

Yeah I've heard that but but I don't buy it. "Just say no" was definitely NOT the curriculum when I was in school and there were a lot more teen pregnancies in my school than in the private Christian school my cousins attended. Just sayin. I think it has a lot more to do with parents and heir failures in teaching their kids good values and safe practices.
