White House May Deny Back Pay to Furloughed Workers Amid Shutdown — Is This Fair?

The US government has been in a partial shutdown since October 1. Now, the White House is considering denying automatic back pay to federal employees who are furloughed.

In the past, workers always received back pay once the shutdown ended, but under this proposal, they might not. Many say it’s unfair because workers are caught in the middle of political fights.

If they are salaried employees, I don't know of it's legal to not pay them. They simply get a fixed pay no matter how many hours they work.

If they are hourly, I don't have a problem with them not getting paid. It's called cutting the budget. Cutting the budget almost always means somebody is not getting paid.

Then there are contractors who work for the government, but are not government employees. I think they never get paid when the government shuts down, including non-official federal holiday holidays that occasionally happen.

A lot of those workers should not be on the taxpayers' payroll to begin with. There is tremendous bureaucratic bloat in government and it needs to be systematically audited and streamlined from top to bottom. But it will never happen because the government bureaucracy has become the unappointed, unconstitutional fourth branch of government and has passed a threshold of power over the people that never should have been allowed to happen.

Having said that, it's unfortunate that people have to lose their jobs, but it's also unfortunate that millions of taxpayers are paying much more of their hard earned income to taxes than they should be. My suggestion is to anyone working in a government job is to consider another career. We need smaller government and more freedom, not bigger government and less.

Whenever I got laid off from a job there was no back pay. Why should government employees get a paid vacation? They should have to collect unemployment like the rest of us
