Should assault on a education worker be classified as a felony?

Assault on a Healthcare worker, Law Enforcement Officer, amd emergency services workers are considered felonies in most states. Do you think education workers no matter 9f they are cafeteria workers. Custodians, teachers. Administrators etc... should be a similar level of felony? Because in NC right now its a class A misdemeanor, but under a possible new law it could be a felony.

Not sure if I agree with that. 'Aggravated' assault on anyone may already be a felony with prison time. In my state it is..

If aggravated assault is already a felony, then the question is whether minor "assaults" should have prison time. I don't think that ANY kind of assault deserves prison time. I don't think an open handed slap, or something even more minor, should result in prison time alongside murderers, rapists, etc. The punishment would not fit the crime.

This is the kind of thing that might mean well, but could potentially result in something very different than what they intend. Similar to how three strikes laws mean well, but the implementation sucks and is not what was intended.

Tennessee as of right now is one of only 10 states that does not have enhanced felony charges for assaulting a firefighter or EMS worker. I am working with legislators to change this. Hopefully as of next year, it will be a felony to assault a firefighter or EMT.

Absolutely. It should be treated like any other assault.

No one should be assaulted in their place of employment. If its a felony to assaulted a police officer then it shouldn't be assumed that its part of a teacher's job.

The more kids and parents that are let away with assaulting teacher's the more it will happen because there are no consequences.

I think assault on anyone should be a felony. I don't support some people being more deserving of justice than others.

Education worker in what context? On the job? What if they get into a fight at a home depot or supermarket on a Saturday? Do they get special status in that case?

As a teacher kneejerk yes. I have reservations tho. The victim (and school) should have a lot of say over the potential felony consequences for a minor.
