Why aren't the drug addled, mentally ill, and often criminal homeless in the USA forced to get a job or go to an asylum?

They’re not reliable workers. So “forcing them to get jobs” is a punishment to the employers, not the shiftless. We could do better to recognize and treat mental illness, especially addiction, and help people find a purpose in life and meaningful work. But i know from experience that they have to want that for themselves first. You can’t make them do what they don’t want to do. Jail isn’t even a good start because anything you can get outside of jail or prison can be gotten into jail or prison. Recovery groups are generally free, but isolated rehab isn’t, and it’s expensive.

In 1970, a trend started of closing government run institutions for mentally ill people. Today there is no place to put them. Also, when Obama care passed, the democrats took money used to care for the mentally ill to pay for insurance for people that can work. The unintended consequence is what we have now.

Are you going to employ them? If you advertise a job vacancy you'll get dozens of people who far exceed the requirements so who's going to employ someone with a known problem.

I believe as more and more lose their jobs to AI we're going to see a lot more addiction and homelessness

They DO have jobs in an asylum -- they're members of Trump's cabinet or they are elected representatives of backwards red states, like TN, AL, LA, MO, TX, AR, KY, MS, OK in particular.
