Practical and decisive, it accomplishes in one year what others debate for ten. It modernizes the country, develops agriculture, industry, and communication. It links peoples, removes obstacles, and borrows from other nations what can strengthen France. It goes to the poor with concrete means to ease hunger and misery, while awakening their sense of belonging to the nation.
Humble yet incorruptible, it rejects flattery and falsehood. It speaks plainly to both rulers and common people. Its influence touches hearts before minds, like an electric force felt before it is understood. It seeks to use that influence not to overthrow society but to rebuild it securely.
By nature, the Napoleonic idea is one of peace, order, and reconstruction. It promotes justice, authority, and liberty, calling for concord rather than hatred. But if it becomes the nation’s last refuge against oppression, it will once again take up its arms and remind the people to cast down their false idols and reclaim their collective honor.

Of course wars are the immediate thought following Bonaparte but part of the text say advances through reason. That might be the ongoing beneficence of Revolutionary & Napoleonic France. As new thought to me - I will need to read and think of that.
The English Revolution (yeah Civil War but it should be lined up with French & American R's) had pretty bad outcomes and failed but thought on government was very a beneficial outcome that endures to this day.
My question back is what beneficence do you see as enduring to this day from Bonapartist ideals?

I'm going to surprise you, but I really admire Napoleon III. Unfortunately, at the end of his life, he suffered from a serious illness and was prescribed drugs that had a very negative effect on his judgement, leading to several mistakes that ultimately resulted in war with Prussia.
Honestly, without that, he would be in the pantheon of French leaders, he would be in the top three.

I was having some beers with a Professor of French history last week after he was fresh from a Napoleon - Good or Bad debate. I mentioned my admiration of Napoleon III's remodeling of Paris and his comment was that straight roads were good for firing cannon balls down against rebelling Parisians.

Bismark suckered Napoleon III in and he did make an unfortunate response. Bismark wouldn't stopped though - he needed a war with France. I am inclined to think Bismark would have eventually made it happen.
Once again, we can find plenty to criticise Napoleon III for, but he modernised Paris and, above all, France. In 20 years, he doubled France's GDP and put France back at the centre of Europe.
So, yes, he was not a democrat, but he did begin to liberalise the regime towards the end of his reign.

I was unaware that Napoleon III had those health issues and yes pain and opium would not have helped decision making. He was advised France would win against Prussia so it wasn't grandiosity on his part. Fault surely lies with the generals?
Napoleon did indeed do good things for France. Would you see UK and France being Allies in Crimea as being the beginning of entente between the two? It was the first time they had fought together.

Not really, in reality, with the liberalisation of the empire, the political parties opposed to Napoleon III were able to acquire significant political influence, and the newspapers, which were having a field day, stirred up public patriotism and did everything they could to ensure that Napoleon III went to war against Prussia.
Napoleon III was ill and no longer in full possession of his faculties, and his mistake in having fired as his most loyal allie meant that he no longer had much control, so he gave in to his opponents and public opinion.
There was no chance that the Napoleon of old would allow himself to be guided by public opinion. But he was no longer himself.
I can see that. Realistically if he was in pain there would be an inclination to decide quickly without the same consideration that might be given otherwise.
What-ifs are not worthwhile but it is hard to resist the what if Franco-Prussian War had not occurred.
Practical idealism is a concept to fool the less smart ones. He was a military genius but what did him different to elites before revolution? Nothing, he was power hungry and sent conscript soldiers without eye blink in certain death, while achieving nothing.
While Napoleon Bonaparte did do some incredible acts. I am wary of any law or pronouncement that comes down from on high. I prefer the Anglo - American "common law" doctrines and practices:
1. That the rulers are bound by the same laws, customs, and traditions as the ruled,
2. That the rulers cannot just arbitrarily change the established law without compelling reasons, and
3. That the laws do not change until there are compelling reasons to change them.
In other words, the next ruler generally follows the standards and practices of his (or today, often her) predecessors.
I think Napoleons ideas would be adopted by later times and generations in the 19th century and 20th century. Especially during the various political changes in France in the 19th century and after the revolutions of 1848.
That thei were good. My country adopted in 1859 his ideas, with small local modifications. Same like the constitution of Franch in 1990, we also copied.
Napoleon III is even above us Romanians. Without Napoleon III, Romania would not exist today on the world map, we owe so much to him and the French people in this regard. He is the one who opposed and managed to limit and even block the influence of Russia in the east. Rest in peace Napoleon III.
