USA is powerful and so set sanctions on many oil tankers. They are enforcing those sanctions.

What gives them the right to sanction anything... is their power in the world by way of military and dollar. It sure isn't "freedom".

They should be able to do the same for the small boats... you'd think. but maybe these people are more dangerous. not so hard to take out a copter with an RPG.

That's what we use to do all the time. We would disable the drug boat's engines. Board the vessel and arrest the drug smugglers, then burn their drugs and scuttle their ship. That said, they weren't designated as terrorist organizations before. Now they are, so they can be terminated far more efficiently.

A tanker is huge. Narco boats are small and numerous, stopping them and boarding them would be expensive. Drones are dirt cheap.
