Would you fly your flag on your house in another country?

The photos show a thrift shop in a Welsh town that's seen better days. As you can see the owner is hedging his bets by selling all British flags. There's even some nice intertwined Union Jacks and Irish bunting , which I'm sure sell well.

In the news recently, there have been stories of very wealthy Americans refugees moving en masse to the UK seeking safety from the current situation.

Now it's got me thinking. Americans love to fly the flag on their homes. But is it OK to do that when living in another country? Or does it risk drawing negative attention?

The USA is a different animal. We are a nation of immigrants. And we have a lot of ethnic neighborhoods where immigrants from a given country have settled together, hold ethnic festivals, and generally try to hold onto their native culture a bit. I get that. So I don't think anything of a neighbor flying a small Italian, British, Polish, Irish, Mexican, Korean, etc. flag on their home.

Would I fly the US flag anywhere else in the world today? No fucking way. My country is an embarrassment and humiliation at the moment. Flying the US flag would probably get your house firebombed or you shot anywhere else on Earth.

I think it depends on where you are. If you're in a homogeneous area, it might read as standoffish. But in a place that's dense and diverse I think it comes off as showing unity and individualistic pride.

I bet coming to another country can be a bit overwhelming or lonely sometimes so seeing the flag of maybe even a country yours was friendly with is probably a relieving sight.

I do not specifically favour any nation over another, but I do believe that there is virtue and good people in the two nations I have lived in full time which is China and Canada. I also spent my summers in America for a few years when I was a child, because we had one grandma who could babysit us, but there were two children who needed babysitting, and my dad decided it would be better I live with them then they live with us since they could offer a better qualify of life for us during the summer then my dad could. My dad worked as an engineering officer while my uncle worked as a doctor.

My American home has a flag pole that occasionally flies both the flag of the USA and the flag of the State of California.

When I lived in the Philippines, my house had a flag pole too but the current tenant "accidentally" knocked it down.

I used to fly both the American flag and the Philippine flag at the same time when I was still living there.

Never by itself. I might fly the US flag as well as the current flag of the nation in which i’m a guest. I think it sends a different and frankly negative message to fly a foreign nation’s flag on foreign soil. Even foreign embassies fly multiple flags as a sign of respect and allegiance.

The only times I fly one now is on Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and 4th of July but I might even flat out forget to do it, these days. I'm not even sure if there IS a flag here!! I'd have to look!! I got a bunch of little ones from when I used to work at the Red Cross.

In USA I see different flags, as long as you also have American flag around, it seems ok.

Elsewhere, I seriously doubt that is going to go well.

No but on my vehicles I put a sticker of the flag from my country and my wife's country. We did the same on our motorcycle helmets that we keep in her country. I do it there because I don't want to be mistaken for an American.

No, I see no benefits. As an ex-pat, isn't moving to another country also a matter of adapting to your new culture and trying to blend in with the rest of the population?

No, I wouldn’t fly it. I only sometimes fly a flag here in the US on the 4th Of July. This past year I did not. I am not big into flag flying but I am very supportive of our Constitution which is symbolized by the flag. I might have a very small handheld one in my house.
