If you were a lawyer, would you defend someone who has been proven guilty? Why or why not?

I would not want to be a defense attorney at all. Because I know that the vast majority of people I defended were guilty. If someone has been arrested, they are most likely guilty.

Idealistically you can argue that everyone has a right to a fair trial, and that would be true. But the legal system has little to do with simply making sure they get a fair trial. It's about pulling every trick in the book to manipulate the system in favor of your client. That's the problem with the entire legal system. It's not about finding truth or justice. It's about playing the game and winning. And to hell with any underlying principal of right or wrong, or truth.

If the defendant has already been judged guilty in a court of law and the court didn't fuck up the trial process and the cops didn't violate the rules of evidence, what is there to represent? A defense after the fact is sorta arriving late to the party.

The whole point of being a lawyer is to get your client the best possible outcome. If you know for a fact your client is and can be proven guilty in a court of law, your job is to get them a plea deal so that their inevitable punishment is easier. Lawyers defend the obviously guilty every day, any good lawyer will say the same.

Yes, guilty or not guilty, everyone deserves to have a legal defense. It is the constitutional right of all Americans, and if I were a lawyer I would provide it if I could afford to do it for not very much money, probably, or for free.
