Why does society view autistic people as mentally incompetent?

Society thinks they can’t make decisions for themselves and they think that they are mentally incompetent. Why is that? And this affects them dating and having sexual relationships. What else does society view autistic people when it comes to dating and sex?

They're like really quirky retards that are hard to ID on sight.
Also, there is a sliding scale so you don't know if they're gonna scream like Rain Man when you try to shake their hand or if they're just gonna stare off in space and organize weird stuff.
Example; Down's Syndrome you see the face, the tongue, you're mentally prepared. Your brain knows, "Oh right, tard ahead"
The Autists and Spergers it's much more fluid. Unpredictable.

They don't drool or wear hockey helmets they kinda look normal.
Depending where they are on the spectrum.

They believe autistics have low intelligence when most have at least normal IQ and some (not Crazy Little Bobby, who's 72 today, Jan.17) are even brilliant. There's a large autism spectrum.
