Did Trump go too far insulting European soldiers who died fighting for America?

Question

One of the big stories in European papers today, particularly UK ones is Trumps comments on how other NATO nations wouldn't help the US and how they stayed away from the front lines in Afghanistan after 9/11

Over 1100 non Americans died in the conflict, including 457 British troops, and there's been cross-party outrage at his comments.

However, looking through social media and newspaper comment sections, I'm seeing lots of Americans praising Trump's trolling and labelling those having concerns at his comments as having TDS.

So thoughts, has Trump gone too far by mocking the fallen? Or do those offended have TDS?

Keep things in perspective. Trump is a grifter who in addition to being politically awkward, is completely ignorant about everything required to be President. That includes basic economics all the way to diplomacy. He is in every sense of the word, a very stupid man who now suffers from dementia.

He's always been a narcissist and he's always been cruel, AND he's a pathological liar. Those who follow him will say that anyone who knows these truths about him and points them out when he displays them, which is every day, have what they've called TDS. In order to believe that, you have to deny that ANYTHING I said above is true, despite the fact that it's proven, and re-proven, on a nauseatingly daily basis, and has been for the last 10 some odd years.

Ironically, it's his cult followers who have TDS because they accept everything he says without question as gospel, exclaiming his infallibility and agreeing when he says things like: "Nobody knows more about ______ than me". This is true for every subject in the world. So simply put, in order to believe that about anyone, you'd HAVE to be deranged yourself, by definition. As we like to say here here in the states, about them and our Republican Party: "Every accusation is a confession". And they are.

It's difficult to realize that:
1) Trump never, EVER tells the truth, unless it's by accident. The expression "if his lips are moving, he's lying" has never been more truthful about anyone in recent history. Even G. W. Bush told the truth more than he does, and that's a very low bar.

2) He will always be able to go LOWER than his previous low. It seems like there has to be a bottom, because you are a rational person, but he is not. He surrounds himself with others who also "have no bottom". We have become accustomed to that.

Has he gone too far, YET AGAIN? Of course. Now you can start an office pool and wager when the next one will be.

Oh this is just another illustration of the poor historical knowledge Americans have. Trump is an American so we can't expect any else but historically defective knowledge.

Americans actually think they won WWI! Whereas of course the Aussies did on the 4th of July 1918 at Hamel and later broke the German back at the final battle of Amiens. There were 4 corps of doughboys at Hamel getting on the job training but essentially they were tagging along. We had to schedule the party for the 4th of July just to get them to show up.

Much the same in WW2. Aussies handed Germany it's first land defeat at Tobruk 1941 and Rommel had to pull his troops back because his nancy boys were scared of the way Aussies hunted them at night.

After Japan entered, Aussies handed them their first defeat on Kokoda and again at Milne bay whilst the GI's struggled at Guadal.

In Vietnam we had to train their Green Berets to keep the bloody noise down cause they would let the Vietcong know where to ambush them with the infernal racket they made.

We are just seeing American over compensation... again. :)

I feel like people act as this is the first time he's done it. It fits well with what he's been saying since he's went into office.

The first time he insulted the veterans was too far but he kept going because he has too. He has to keep going out of the norm, and make grand shit gestures to keep is little worms celebrating him. For me it honestly shows how Americans are. Big loud bullies with no regards to anyone else in this world.

I don’t think so. The point he was making poorly is simply this: more than twice as many US soldiers have died in Afghanistan than ALL other nations’ troops combined. Ten times more US troops have been seriously injured than have died.
Your troops and their families can manufacture all the outrage you like. European soldiers DID avoid the fight more than the US.

You have to realize that tRump hates all soldiers. They remind him that he is a coward who dodged the draft 5 times. And if there's one thing a malignant narcissist can't stand it's being outed as a fraud and a coward.

tRump has lived his entire life desperate for respect. He craves acceptance and acknowledgement of his (delusional) "greatness". Someone else being acknowledged or rewarded triggers rage and jealousy in a narcissist.

tRump is outraged that Obama received a Nobel Peace Prize 17 years after the fact. And he is humiliated at being rejected for a trophy of his own by the Nobel committee. tRump also insults US soldiers who died in battle, calling them suckers and losers.

All while knowing he himself is a complete piece of shit and the biggest most pathetic loser of all. Did tRump go too far? Yeah, that piece of shit is mentally ill. He will always go too far. He resents people who are what he wants to be but can never be.

The Brits were there for us. But we didn't get the feeling that Europe really supported us. For me, I felt like they just gave it the minimum.

The US in contrast would have sent armored divisions, infantry divisions, squadrons of aircraft, hundreds of thousands of combat personnel. We didn’t even get a tenth of that and it showed. I do respect the ones that died. Someone of here showed how as a percentage of population they gave a lot in terms of war dead but it never made news here and it didn’t leave that impression.

Too far. It's a short sentence but causes emotional division.  It's easy for him to be insensitive, it's it's hard for others to repair the damage.  Is what he is saying true... US put a lot more in than anyone else? Were others avoiding front lines? I really don't know. I know some were there, many died, Harry flew missions. I thought we got support.  This is not how one builds friends and alliances. It is how the old world is torn apart.

This is being misrepresented. Trump didn’t mock or deny the sacrifice of European soldiers who died in Afghanistan. He criticized NATO governments’ defense policies and operational restrictions, which is a separate issue.

Both things can be true at once: allied troops fought bravely and suffered losses, and some NATO countries imposed caveats that limited where and how their forces operated, leaving the U. S. carrying a disproportionate share of frontline combat and cost.

Critiquing governments and alliance burden-sharing isn’t an insult to fallen soldiers. Conflating the two is emotional framing, not an accurate account of what was said.
