Why are men the only group you’re allowed to generalise?

“Men need to stop raping women.”

And if you think generalising men like this is wrong, you’re told: only the men who do these things should be offended.

Okay, then:

“Black people need to stop committing crimes.”
“Muslims need to stop being terrorists.”
“Women need to stop being gold diggers.”

Not all Black people.
Not all Muslims.
Not all women.

All valid arguments, apparently—but not when it comes to men. Why are you allowed to say “men need to stop” etc., but can’t say that about anyone or anything else, and then claim that only people who do those things should be offended?

The way I see it there are a few reasons why


It’s a widely accepted idea that the more powerful the group , the more acceptable it is to generalize about them , between men and women it’s accepted that man is the more powerful


Bad behavior gets framed as male behavior so when men do something wrong it’s often said.. “men are like this “ , whereas for women it’s “ that woman is like this “. This happens ALL THE TIME on this forum


Culturally Men are ‘expected’ to absorb criticism, or “take it on the chin “ as the phrase goes or “take it like a man “ so it’s generally more expected and received unchallenged , men won’t because they are told to “take it like a man”


Another reason that happens right here on this forum is that online spaces like this reward the outrage “ men always do this “ type posts get way more clicks that “ well some men sometimes if that then this “ type posts.. personally I hate the generalization and have often took the bait knowingly especially where the generalization is completely unfounded


The hard truth is that Generalizing ANY group is intellectually lazy. The reason why it seems accepted for men isn’t because it’s correct , it’s because the social cost of the generalization is lower

It's true that men are subject to more scrutiny than women in modern Western society and it has to change. Women in the west really need to make a change, but it seems so hard for them to take a genuine look in the mirror.

this is false equivalence. 98% of all sexual/violent crimes are committed by men. "men need to stop raping and killing women" is an appropriate statement. that's a documented pattern.

the reason it's generally not okay to say things like you have listed is because those kinds of statements have been use unfairly in order to dehumanise groups of people that have already been marginalised and discriminated against. men have power that is granted to them automatically. we are allowed to criticize them for egregious behaviour. if men were a marginalised group who had violence issues as a result of systematic oppression, things would be different. "men need to stop" is challenging a problem that comes disproportionately from men.

sure, you can say black people need to stop committing crimes, but so does every other race. black people do commit more crimes relatively speaking, but white people still make up over half. if black people made up 90% of crimes the criticism would be valid. same goes for the other examples you gave.

I already knew the point, I just disagree with it.. First off, there's no point in saying it because the only people who commit these crimes are the ones who know it's wrong and don't give a damn.. And secondly men aren't the only violent ones.. I've experienced plenty of violent women in my lifetime.. Thirdly, generalizing is silly because it doesn't get to the core of the issue, it doesn't get to the people who actually do the crimes.. firstly, i am sorry you experienced violence. that is not okay at all. the point of a generalisation is typically to cope in a moment of hurt or frustration. untrue generalisations are harmful because it encourages false rhetoric. the problem is you keep changing your point. first, you kept flip flopping my argument. i was saying, for example, "most rapists are men" and somehow you interpreted that as "most men are rapists." then when you finally understood where your argument failed, you basically said, "i know that, but i disagree!" then unleashed a red herring by saying the generalisation has no point. go back and read the original post. we're discussing the ethics of generalisations, not whether or not they are effective. you realised you couldn't win the argument so you changed the premise of our discussion. clearly you are just offended at this point and simply want to continue arguing even though you can't properly defend against my talking point. i'm a little disappointed that a grown man is incapable of holding his own against a highschool girl. i feel like you probably know your own points, you just dont know how to articulate them.
