I agree. But North, Central and South American countries are all part of the Americas, yet people in the USA are the only ones who refer to themselves as Americans. I guess that's because it would be awkward to refer to themselves as USAans or United States of Americans.
And people from south of the border refer to Americans as Norte Americanos to distinguish from all the other American countries.

Other countries refer to their country - Canadians, Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Colombians, etc.

People in Europe are Europeans but differentiate themselves by country - British, French, German, Swedish, Italian, etc.

I really hate how some people make this argument. I would hear it a lot when I lived in Japan. United States of America, so they call themselves Americans to shorten it. You're playing a game of semantics and it's retarded. You want them to call themselves "United States people" instead, good for you... pat yourself on the back and have a cookie. Nobody cares. You know what they mean, but you're going to argue it like you have a real point. Lame.

Maybe break it down, this American dream is Civil Nationalism vs blood and soil Nationalism. Like come on... just a bit more than semantics that any Brazillian would understand when some guy from Ohio says "I'm American."

No bash on you, I liked you ever since I was D_Bone_Steak, but this argument in particular triggers me because of my lived experiencce. The Japanese would understand the meaning just fine and then some other American guy would always be there to make this same pointless exact same argument as if it really matters. Geographically they are both American invited wrongs I mean I agree they are American.
Even if they are Brazilian they are still in America. Like calling people Europeans even if they’re from different countries.

Can you imagine how absurd it is to think otherwise? OK, Let’s play their game. If a Canadian says he hates Americans, I guess he’s talking about himself. If a Russian says, he hates Americans. He’s obviously talking about Mexicans or Colombians.
If somebody asks me what color the American flag is, I will say “ It depends, America has 35 flags. You’ll have to be more specific.”

What I don't understand is if people from America are called Americans, then why do people from Mexico don't acknowledge that they are Mexican but call themselves Hispanic and speak Spanish? Dutch people speak Dutch. Mexicans should say they are Mexican. Period.

If you are from USA you are and USA citazian. If you are from Brazil, you are American and brazilian, because you are born on the American continents.
Canadians are americans.
Mexicans are americans.
Caraibians nations are americans

As everybody knows, the word American is a simplification attached to people from the United states. It's a lot easier saying American than it is to say Unitedstatesian. In the cold war, we used the expression Russians for those people instead of saying Unionofsovietsocialistrepublicsian. Their simplification was Soviet our simplification is American.

Brazil is in South America. Therefore Brazilians are also Americans. For accuracy, if you’re from the USA, then you’re a US citizen. Anyone and everyone who comes from the Americas is American. It’s frankly a childish mistake.
