I mean I refuse to believe it was a result of MLKs movement and such. White men were the ones in power, if they didn't want Black people to vote and such that would simply continue to be the case. Or were the riots so severe they were afraid it will escalate?

Are you… not aware of how violent the protests got? How cruel the standing powers looked when they told police to sic K9 units on protesters? Or used firehoses? Power is based on illusions of control, but not so much that the people feel like they have no control themselves. This was pushing the boundary into territory where people were coming together and agreeing with the sentiment that the current administration needs to change or be undone.

Officially, in the mid-60's with the Civil Rights, Voting Rights and other anti-discrimination laws. Actually, America is still highly segregated.
