Why would a person try to defend somebody who is a complete stranger to them?

It's tough but it's the right thing to do. Take the first step and you find everything else fall's into place. Better then having sleepless nights what could have been a heroic experience.

My experience was someone got sucker punched and a dozen guys jumped myself included body block the knocked out person. People are calling the emergency number and together we are protecting each other.

Similar situation can happen in train or subways but bad things happen because the security of reinforcement is limited. That's where majority of the scary footage happens but it happens all the time everywhere but because we look after each other nothing happens so it's not interesting.

The opposite of the survival bias.

Why not? Maybe they need said help and no one else is around to help them.
If you were walking along and then saw some guy in front of you that you didn't know knock over a woman in front of him that you didn't know, rip her clothes off and start raping her, are you gonna tell me that you'd either just stand there and watch or just walk by like there was nothing happening?
What if it was you getting raped and some total stranger walked by or stood there watching? Would you be okay with that BECAUSE they're a stranger?
