I mean yeah and no, pretty sure The essay is more about how fandoms can be cult like which is true. It can be applied to many fandoms and many things that people can become toxic and tribalistic.
It's not about an individual liking something, it's about how this effect happens in such groups. Which is true to any of them. So it's not targeted at just one fandom.
