What is your opinion on phones, computers and websites being required to verify age?

There is a direction the internet seems to getting pushed in: survalience and the removal of anonymity.

Sounds obvious on the surface but I think it actually has more to do with fighting foreign propaganda than anything else.

Maybe what's going to happen is we'll all spend less time on social media and actually talk to eachother more.

I don't like the change but the more I think about it lately the more I start to believe it might be the only way to undo the damage that's been done.

I think it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing situation.
It’s not like I don’t get where people are coming from, kids get groomed on the internet more often than most are comfortable admitting, being manipulated into doing things they otherwise wouldn’t have done and fucking up a lot of things psychologically. But this is not the solution people hope it is for that particular issue. If someone wants a kid, they’ll find ways to get them, they’ll lie and claim to also be a child despite having access to the age-restricted materials and spread them around anyway. And in the meantime these government entities now have backdoor access to all of these age-restricted websites, removing the possibility of anonymity and further creating an international panopticon where nothing is private and everything is monitored constantly.
The real solution isn’t age-restriction, it’s restricting the fucking apps, the endless greed that creates these dopamine factories that gets people addicted to shitty scrolling things, constantly keeping them in a shitty state of mind, removing their hope for a better future and so it won’t come. They don’t care about that, they never have, they just want to know every possible detail about us forever because they think that makes the world safer.

I think it's a terrible idea. It's just making this world a surveillance state even more than it already is. It makes me want to stop using sites and programs for doing it (like Discord for example which just rolled it out this month).

This isn't about protecting kids. It never is. It's just getting faces and names attached to comments so that authorities can come down on civilians for things they post online and eliminating free speech.
