How can some think the US is the land of opportunity for others, yet want to leave because it's so bad?

Without mentioning specifics, we know that there are some people who believe everyone should come to the United States, and be let in, because the US is the land of opportunity. Yet, some of those same people believe things are so bad in the US that they leave and move to other countries... some of them later return to the US.

Does this make sense? Can someone explain this apparent contradiction?

Well just because we all live here doesn't mean that we think the same way the country is divided in 25 different types of scenarios probably all the way from being the greatest country in the world to being the worst bullies the worst Liars the worst cheaters the worst government the World's Dumbest dumbest people because other countries are judging because of what our government does versus what the people do


There's a lot of smart people here and they don't like what they see they don't like what's going on and they they can see it they if they tell us it everyday our government does and people still don't believe what's going to happen and there's tons of people that want to leave but they can't because their morals tell them to leave but they have no money to leave because the government has their thumb on everything so many American people are just fed up with everything if China was to walk in here right now and say I can do this for you I will do this for you I want to take over your country I'm curious on how many people would say yes that's how tired the people are you work your ass off and you make good money but the cost of living and the highway robbery that the government has going on nobody is getting anywhere we're still losing before all the groceries prices started going up that's when everybody got it good wages and for like 4 months people were actually living life buying their kids cars doing fun things but then grocery prices tripled and even 10 times what the price was and that just put everybody right back in that slump but just like with any country you can get 20 people together ask them what they think it's all going to be different

Hmmm... if you're living South Sudan, the USA might sound like a great, opportunity filled land compared to what you have, especially if you were reading old school propaganda. How would they afford it anyway?

For the first time in nearly 100 years, more people vacated the USA in 2025 than moved to it. Some of that is due to shutting down visa from 75 countries, but the exit numbers are the highest ever and getting bigger.

I have been unable to find any relevant information on expats who repatriated in 2025. I would be surprised if that number were greater than double digits. I'm also hard pressed to figure out what sort of opportunities are available to immigrants who have the bare minimum income to be admitted. And then there's the inherent hate you'll get, depending on where you're from.

I think the idea of the land of opportunity is outdated by decades. People once believed it because of propaganda but these days thanks to social media we can see your struggling just as much as we are.

It's true there's been a big surge in Americans moving here, with last year being the highest on record. Luckily they tend to be rich Americans or skilled workers. The main reason quoted is safety in the current political climate. But i suspect its mostly our delicious food

Another thing is if you've been living here for 5 years you qualify for free health care and prescriptions, plus retired people don't need a work permit. It's attractive for older people to spend their last 5 working years here then retire to get the free stuff, plus cost of living is cheaper and you won't get shot.

Look closer at the people with these opinions. If you come from some fucked-up failed state in Latin America, Asia or Africa, or course the United States is looking like paradise. If you are a well-traveled American, who has experienced how life is in Europe without the American gun bullshit, race bullshit, for-profit everything bullshit, healthcare bullshit or political bullshit, why wouldn't you want that for yourself?

Because not everyone that comes here can turn that opportunity into something liveable or affordable. Or some people that were born here aren't really drinking the US Kool aid and they try living elsewhere. That's possibly some reasons. Probably a lot of others too

As to quality of lifestyle versus one city versus another city and the culture within the culture of a country aka - some US states I imagine are very backwards and others are very towards
