Is the business of selling and renting cone signs, custom signs, and traffic cones lucrative?

Most companies who do that work have their own and they are not something that needs replacing often. Unless you like dropship only for cheap prices or something with little to no investment I wouldn't get in to it. I remember a company I worked for had the lower pay employees repaint all our signs one time to avoid buying new ones. Those things are sold here in safety related stores with a very large variety of safety related products and usually make their money off of safety tests for respirator fit tests and stuff like that and not sale volumes. You need safety stuff with an expiry date like harness lanyards or something that wears out to have a shot but even the place we get those from makes there money off training and certification.

Don't most businesses need signs? Parking lots? Indoor signs? What about common/generic signs? What about events, churches, gatherings, crowd control, and things of this nature?

So that is something else entirely and it can be but that is going to be based on how crowded that space is where you are and what the reputation of those doing it before have. Where I am at is in a resession and commercial properties are being turned into residential and the companies doing it here are well established. Your only way in where I am from would be to be able to afford to undercut the competetion so drastically for such a period of time that there is less competition or offer something so new an revolutionary that others couldn't duplicate like the first 3d hollogram sign or something. Any business is viable if you are able to lose long enough that you start winning. But the company We use here does sign but most of there money comes from having billboards and marketing rentals like bench adds and stuff for which they had to print signs and then sell the signs as an after thought. The most steady work in that field is wraps for commercial vehicles but if you are doing that you might as well open a wrap shop and wrap non commercial also and forget about sign making altogether.

yes, but usually it is municipalities that use these prodicts the most and they are usually bid contracts or else politicians expect some form of kickback.

I really don't know, but it's an interesting question. It seems like you'd have to be able to keep a fairly large stock of this stuff, unless, of course, you rented it at a discounted rate from yet another company as needed.
