I still can't believe you can. I have to check a box on my taxes to be sent a form that I have to have with me and 2 pieces of ID at a certain time and place to vote or really sweetalk the lady running the thing into looking the other way on a couple things when I have 3/4 of the stuff and am clearly not trying freud anyone

Meh. We have compulsory voting in Australia. 98% enrollment rates; 92% voter turnout. Documentation is used at enrollment, no id at voting. Seems to work just fine. Everyone gets a say. Sadistic, narcissistic psychopaths are rarely elected to run the country.

I live in a democrat run state so the system is rigged so that you do not need an ID. In fact it is illegal to even ask somebody if they are an illegal alien. All you need to register to vote is a state issued drivers license and the state gives out free drivers licenses to illegal aliens. No ID is reqired to vote. Easy peasy.

So the problem is the SAFE act won't just let you use your state ID. You'd have to use a real ID which only about 56% of Americans have. And many have privacy concerns for real ID.

Passports are expensive for lots of low income people and birth certificates won't work if the name on your ID doesn't match the birth certificate, that's why the SAFE act is stupid. It's meant to disenfranchise people, especially poor and women.

It really is whether you want to believe it or not. You aren't affected so you don't care but for the millions who won't be able to vote if this passes, they WILL care.

Also, the government is making it harder to get a passport now anyway. They are slowing processing times and removing sites like libraries from people being able to use them to file from.

To add on to that, Republicans in several red states are closing voting centers to 1 location in large democratic voting areas and they are trying to eliminate mail in voting. If you want any of this then you are admitting you will fail if things were done fairly.

Who cares if a majority want it? The fact remains that it is a poor tax to keep those who can't afford it to be unable to vote and makes it harder for those who dont have matching names to be able to get an ID.

No, I'm saying that many people don't have the money needed to get the required ID. A passport costs about $170. There are also fees to get copies of birth certificates, marriage licenses, and any other required documentation.
