Should provoking or antagonizing someone be treated as a crime?

For example, you go out with a girl, some guy takes your girl, maybe even makes fun of you. Is he not forcing you into a situation where you either must accept the humiliation or get arrested for assault?

Thank god it isn't or they would have locked me up and thrown away the key a long time ago.
