Why are white criminals seen as individuals but non‑white ones as racial reps?

Just something I've noticed in Western society. When a white person does something terrible (killing their kids, outed as a pedophile, murder, robbery, school shootings etc), the entire race isn't condemned and the person is seen as an individual. Meanwhile, when a non-white person does something bad, that person is not seen as an individual but a representation of their entire race behavior. Why is it like this in the West?

I think there is some validity to this take. I think group guilt applies to blacks a bit more than whites.

The reasons I would guess, it is the numbers. There are so many more crimes and criminals based on the percentages committed by each group.

Because the majority of White Americans don’t actually care about crime. They care about crime when it’s a black or brown person doing it.

I don't think it's really related to the West, per se, I believe it's more linked to collective perceptions of what looks similar and different in a relative location. I believe it's related to reflex racism, as in racist thoughts you'd experience, internally, before it gets intercepted by rational thinking. I believe that a predominantly black country would be wary of white faces, just because such a face constitutes a rupture in the norms for that location.

But then everything perception gets complicated when we add historical and cultural factors to the mix.

I also believe we more easily lean towards living in a world of representations than living in an objective world. A trait most, if not all, political leaders strategically use to build their voter base.

Because people view the world through a lens of their own prejudices and underlying beliefs. What you described is simply people's inherent racism manifesting itself in their response to events in everyday life.

Personally i think that a crime only represent the person himself/herself, no matter who commits the crime, they will be judged the same!

The attack on Bethany MaGee reminds me a lot of the attack of Ukrainian woman Iryna Zarutska.
Both were attacked on trains.

It's proportion. Black people are a smaller sample size, but commit more crime. So the crime rate amongst blacks is higher than amongst Whites.

I think maybe because it happens more often with a particular race than another race, it just depends who is doing it more that gets recognized
