The USA was the NATO country who struck Iran first with missiles. Since the USA struck first they aren’t considered the victim of an armed attack. The USA is the aggressor.
NATO is about defense.
NATO is not about helping the aggressor. NATO is about helping the member country who is a victim of an armed attack.

He didn't discuss the war with them ahead of time, launching the war illegally and then just expecting them to contribute to it. By not providing aide, they hope to send the message that they are not at the United States' beck and call.

Imagine you're out with a friend and your friend just punches a guy in the face out of nowhere, then looks at you and says "Well, are you going to get him?" That's basically what happened.

@strateguy632 He is the commander in chief, not the king. The legal authority to declare war soley rests with congress, as specifically stated in the United States constitution. A president declaring war is an illegal act.

This war is not a NATO issue. NATO is a defense organization. The US started this war; it's offensive, not defensive.

I would say primarily it is strongly driven by rhetoric in the US. As Trump is bad mouthed domestically, it rubs off and diminishes the US internationally.

NATO countries have taken advantage of the US providing for Europe's security. Of course they are reluctant to change & pay from that.

Third there probably wasn't the time to do the negotiations. It was better to take action now with Israel than spend months negotiating as happened with the first Iraq war. Not having negotiated though I guess there wasn't buy in.

A main problem seems like there haven't been requests from the US for assistance. The UAE asked us (Australia) for assistance and we had a Wedgetail there in a few days.

According to our gov't the US has (unlike UAE) not made any requests for assistance though I wouldn't be surprise if they have lied through their teeth because they are Labor after all.. I would appreciate Trump exposing them if they have lied.

We tend to contribute in more specialist areas as a small country. Superior AWACS is one area where we do have the goods. They get around. Ukraine, Iraq, Syria and now the Gulf. US AWACS are aged and can't track as much so hopefully it is helping.

Special Forces is another area we are good at. We don't have a vast fleet of frigates however.

Because the European Union is on suicide watch. They are ungrateful children who have been on America's tit for 70 years. I will guess that Donald Trump is going to back out of NATO, bring all of our troops home And then sell popcorn. And this is what the European Union deserves.

They are all one way. They depend on the US when they are threatened but when the US needs some help or wants to show solidarity they are usually hiding in the bathroom.

It will be funny to see how long it will take for China or Russia to make a move on Europe it the US pulls out if NATO.

@DryGermanGuy I don't remember ever seeing ant NATO countries come to the US and help find bodies at ground zero. I don't remember any help toward upgrading our security. Maybe I am nor remembering it right.

Yes, because these are people who are smart enough to get not get involved in Trump's illegal activities and become criminals themselves. There is nothing about the NATO agreement that says that you have to help another country that is engaged and illegal aggression to where you at another country, which is what the US has done thanks to Trump.
