Actually, some understanding of origin can be gleaned from surnames.

Germans are actually the largest group of immigrants in the US melting pot with about 40 million people of German heritage residing here. German immigration started in greater numbers earlier than any other nationality. I'm German on my father's side. My ancestors landed here in 1749 and migrated through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri over the next 200 years. Look at that migration path and you'll see Amish, Mennonites, and Seventh Day Adventists all over the place. The story for Germans was similar to other European immigrants, economics, politics, and religion back home in Germany.

According to various censuses 14-15% claim German heritage. I wouldn't take it too seriously though. If your parents haven't been actual Germans, you are German neither. These trendy DNA tests that tell you that you are "13,5% German" are just silly.
