in terms of breaking rules of "femininity" like, long hair is feminine, skinny is feminine etc etc. I know beauty standards shift practically every decade but I often ponder as to how vintage girls on silver screens had more freedom, they were allowed to be chubby, they could have distinct hairstyles and wear their locks short, compared to female celebrities now, bound by PR and social media presence. in fact, nowadays you gotta do this weird training to sound raw and authentic to media reporters and gen z fans, gay hockey show actors did it and youtube said there ain't no way they asked a whole marketing team to straighten things out

I wasn't alive for that but what I think I pick up on is that it was charming then because they were rebelling against the definition of feminity while maintaining and celebrating their feminity..

The celebrities today kind of protest and demean feminity as a whole.

Like how often do you see on the internet a comment along the lines of "I'm embarrassed to get a boyfriend"

Or if there's a clip of a happy couple being silly together someone will say

"I'm getting second hand embarrassment she's got a man"

Granted, it sounds like something an intelligence worker in a sweatshop would write but I think the point stands.

It's complicated for me because I don't really remember 80s actresses lol, or actors for that matter. What's even more complicated is that I have little to no exposure to what is mainstream anymore, due to the advent of algorithmic internet... I surely pick up some trends here and there but that's thin

some women follow trends, others go against it... that has never changed

there's always a more controlled and mainstream, but also the outliers that stand out because of exactly... just another trend out of the formulae trend

I don't know about Hollywood but Indian celebrities then had wild parties and it was easier to get scoop out of it. Sometimes it wasn't interesting, but people were comfortable in knowing celebrities are boring too

the new "mainstream" source of entertainment, since 2020... is social media

20 years ago, this didn't exist at all, so nevermind 40 years ago back in the 80's

you talk about Hollywood as mainstream media but nowadays... influencers and YouTubers can easily make a lot more money than most actors in Hollywood... it's the same with music and so many other things as well

THAT changed... but I will tell you what has never changed

advertising, marketing and propaganda... all of those who paid for Hollywood... have switched to pay for YouTube and socials... they are still in control of all of them famous people
