That's a challenging question.
Women have always been treated like sex objects in movies and especially in TV commercials. Guys always looked at women like sex objects, too.
There was a lot of sexism. Women got cat called. Waitresses often had their asses pinched and swatted. They were called broads, chicks and dames. And women mostly went along with it because that's just way things were.
Things began gradually changing by the 1970s. That's when I entered high school and first started interacting with girls/women and society. So my only knowledge of the 50s and 60s is movies, TV, magazines and books.
I think "conventionally attractive" was different than today. There was no internet, Instagram, porn, Photoshop, AI or filters. The only naked women were in magazines like Playboy and everybody knew those photos were airbrushed. People didn't rate each other 1-10. They weren't so harsh in their judgements and comparisons.
People didn't get plastic surgery, so they lived with the way they were and did the best they could.
Girls didn't judge guys by cock size and guys weren't picky about things like nipple shapes or pussy lips. People didn't shave or wax their pubes.
There was no radical feminism and no such thing as incel or MGTOW. People weren't bitter. If they were interested in the opposite sex, they picked the best that they could get.
People dated, got into relationships, had sex. (The pill was released in the 60s.) Some were more promiscuous than others, just like today but, again, there was no internet and no digital cameras, so the only reputations were by word of mouth and no permanent records were kept.
And like forever, some people were more interested in personality than perfect appearance.
So most men and women who weren't so "conventionally attractive" still found partners.
I wasn't alive yet so I have no firsthand knowledge.
I imagine if they weren’t ignored they were openly ostracized for flaws in their appearance. They probably stayed in their first miserable marriage with the first guy that even thought it was worth it just because he didn’t want to be without a wife. It probably made for a shitty home life for their kids too.
Most women weren't fat in the era. You could be average and be a big hit in the media.
