There's more actual fighting going on now than in recent memory. Whats it like, can those in the military speak openly?

Really depends on how the war is being fought. Now in Iran, they're using air strikes than ground invasion since they know they would never win a ground invasion.
But truth is... vast majority of these troops are kids raised by poor families who can't afford to send themselves to college, which is why they are hoping they can get out and GI bill will make college free for them at the end. Either this or misfits who ran into some sort of trouble and need a way out.
yes. can only imagine the fear many have. never know when "it" could strike and find yourself drowning or burning in a ship. It's real risk most of us never face.
I have to believe it would make at least the one's who would be in direct contact in the war zone very nervous and scared. It's not Fortnight on you X box it is real people shooting real bullets at each other.

The people who serve are cannon fodder for the rich and powerful as toy soldiers meant to die for political whims not for the betterment of mankind.
The people want domestic issues to be solved, not going out to pointless conflicts to die. America First sentiment was the literal point of it in a condensed package.
always the case, ever leading country. sad but reality.
most are under privileged kids that want the training /education. some like Hegseth could have avoided but joined anyways.
I think it's very situational.
Situation of Russian "contractor" who is on the way to be gutted by Ukrainian drones differs from someone sitting in commando bunker 1000km from frontline.
yes, but anyone could be called to front line or find themselves on one rapidly where used to be "on vacation" in germany...
