Not necessarily in total, but there is a skool of thought that suggests the more people that live in a given community, the faster and more severely the community declines. Specific numbers have been suggested for maximums and ideal, and there is a great deal of research proving certain correlations. There are benefits and detriments to more people in totality, but there absolutely has to be an upper limit to the benefits. There is only so much livable land, and even though there is no legitimate shortage of any meaningful resources, almost every developed nation on Earth has permitted a tiny wealthy, powerful and ultimately greedy minority to control those resources for profit and yet more power.

Well a world without humans would be much better for environment.
But as a world we carry on existing in, it's oversimplified but yes at least the idea goal of the future I see.
Which is less humans needed for mundane jobs as tech has replaced such jobs, most humans are slaves some more content than others to be so.
This not content to be so lot causes a lot of problems in society thus would disappear if that wasn't a need.
In a world not of need for humans to do such jobs you can't and won't want more people you'd be better with less cause now you have a problem with what do all those people now do?

Much of our existing technology level would be impossible to maintain if global population levels were lower. It costs hundreds of millions of dollars to launch space satellites for phones and weather forecasting, etc. Insurance sales would be imossible in high risk areas, because without a higher population in low risk areas there would be no way for insurance to cover those high risk areas.

There are all sorts of problems with the "lower the world population" agenda. Who gets to decide who gets to reproduce?

If we're going to lower world population, we should only allow people with IQ greater than 100 to reproduce.

IF governments are willing to spend money on the right things, Earth could hand more folks. If they're not willing, zero population growth and more education will do just fine.

Stupidity is indeed measurable and is based on cognitive performance under controlled conditions. Ignorance is a different animal.
