If a single person is trying to break into your home without a team it should not be too hard to win that fight. You know the terrain, they don't. You know where you can ambush them from a blind corner in the dark. So if you have a gun sit and wait for them to fall into the kill box. If not a knife will work just fine. The general rule is that a person with a knife can cover 21 feet and attack before someone can draw a gun. I have guns, but a Tramontina machete is always closer at hand and I use it regularly... If you come through a door with a blind corner in the dark and you get hit in the neck with a machete repeatedly before you can react then it's lights out... Chop chop...

How many people do you think are expecting that? Machetes aren't all that common in the states, but in the tropics they are. I have land that I maintain and the machete is one of my basic hand tools that I use pretty much daily.

You are legally allowed. The simple fact they're armed is sufficient evidence that your life is in danger and regardless of where you life that gives you a lot of rights.

The law is if you're carrying anything then it's assumed you are planning to use it. It's why burglars in the UK rarely go armed, if you're caught your sentence goes from a few months to 10 years for armed robbery. Plus the homeowner now has legal right to kill you.

There was an incident where a girl was pushed on to some subway tracks, she didn't prosecute because she didn't want to put another black man in jail. A few later he murdered someone.

My point is that when criminals know there will be no consequences they do not fear breaking the law.

Yeah I actually had that happen once and fortunately, I had a gun and the guy who was breaking in sort of stopped doing what he was doing when he saw the gun. I held him at gunpoint in my kitchen while I called the cops and then had a long conversation with him because it took the cops literally an hour and a half to get to my house. We have lousy cops where I live.

Dargil is spot on. If there's a physical barrier protecting you it's near impossible to claim self defence. But once it's breached you can pretty do what you want to an armed intruder because it's virtually impossible to find a jury that will convict you.
