Are most people who talk about “free speech” only for it when they get to criticise others but against it when other people criticise them?

My mother has always said to me growing up treat other people the way you wish to be treated. If other people are nice to me and care about my feelings I will do the same thing for them.

I'm generally a free speech advocate when it comes to ideas and draw the line when I start getting called names or get personal attacks, but this website has taught me to avoid political topics... expecially if I'm anywhere right of Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin because that's when the reports start coming in and I get -7 points here and -7 points there.

For instance I recently saw a loaded question where all economic hardships were placed at the feet of Republicans... it was very tempting to respond... but it's just a trap. Even though it's easy to prove them wrong, it's just going to equal me being called a bunch of names and getting reported. And I'm not even more than moderate that leans right economically. Same goes when I see a "kill all men" post... I have to just skip it.

I've done it in the past, true, but that's why I'm no longer a Master account or have like 8 different influencer statuses like I did before. When this site dips into anything political, this site becomes dangerous to any long term success unless you're down with all the far left ideas.

Pretty much yes, but I think they're issue is more with negative consequences of their speech. Criticizing is fine, but people shouldn't be punished and shamed for their views.
With ME the issue is more people not wanting to accept the truth or see the bigger picture. The biggest problems starts when people start to bully and punish you simply for speaking the truth.

Criticizing while not liking to be criticized has more to do with narcissicism then free speech

It’s not that “most people are hypocrites,” but rather that free speech is an ideal people often struggle to apply equally in both directions, especially under emotional pressure.
